Ecobee3 smart thermostat review: It’s all about that sensor

The Ecobee3 works differently than the rest, which is its greatest strength.

Remote sensors help to make the entire house comfortable, not just the location the thermostat is in ; Easy set-up and installation (provided you have a C-wire) ; Great touchscreen interface ; Excellent data tracking and reporting

Requires a C-wire or else rather daunting installation of a wiring adapter kit ; Remote sensors can be configured only at the thermostat, not via the app ; Geofencing depends on an IFTTT channel ; Pricey

For dealing with a house with distinct hot and cold spots, the Ecobee3 is easily the best choice. The addition of the remote sensors enables you to track and compensate for temperature changes throughout the house. While it’s not a perfect solution,...

Ecobee3 Lite review

I'm not saying $169 is cheap, but it's a darn good price in smart thermostat-land. There, Wi-Fi models regularly sell for over two hundred bucks and very few work with Amazon Alexa , Apple HomeKit , Samsung SmartThings , Wink and IFTTT .

A responsive touchscreen and integrations with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, Wink and IFTTT give the lower-priced $169 Ecobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat serious appeal.

"Smart" is a bit of a stretch for the Ecobee3 Lite, since it doesn't rely on activity-tracking sensors or any other sort of adaptive tech to learn your routine. $169 is still a lot to spend, especially on a programmable thermostat.

No other Wi-Fi thermostat available today offers this many smart home partnerships for this low of a price, but you should weigh the importance of the integrations against the MSRP -- many 7-day app-enabled programmable thermostats cost just $100.

The Ecobee3 Lite is a decent smart thermostat that costs less than most

But depending on your home's layout, you may miss the remote sensor support.

Your home's layout and size will ultimately guide you to decide which device will serve you best. Larger multifloor homes may be better served with the Ecobee3, while smaller abodes could get by with the Ecobee3 Lite. Either one is simple to use and...

Ecobee3 Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat, HomeKit-enabled review

Toronto-based Ecobee may not have the name recognition of Honeywell or Nest , but it was actually the first company to come out with an app-enabled thermostat. Its initial line of smart thermostats was funneled through dealers though, which limited the...

The $249 Ecobee3 comes with an installation workaround in case your system doesn't have a C wire, as well as a remote sensor that extends its temperature-and-motion-sensing range.

Many existing HVACs don't have or need a C wire, and Ecobee's fix isn't for novices.

While the Ecobee3 doesn't quite match the design and usability of the Nest Learning Thermostat, it is definitely worthy of your consideration.

Ecobee3 Smart WiFi Thermostat

The Ecobee3 is a stylish Wi-Fi thermostat that you can control from anywhere, and it uses remote sensors to control the temperature of multiple rooms in your house.

Easy to install and configure. Android, iOS, and Web browser support. Remote sensors. Sleek design

Temperature slider can be tricky. Cannot monitor remote room temperature

When you think of digital home thermostats, the Nest Learning Thermostat is probably the first product that comes to mind. But before Nest burst onto the scene in 2011, Canadian-based Ecobee had already introduced a smart thermostat two years earlier....

ecobee3 HomeKit Enabled Review

The ecobee3's user interface and remote sensors have no equal among digital thermostats. The remote sensors wirelessly communicate with the central unit and have the ability to track what is going on in each room and area of your house. There are a...

The ecobee3 comes with a remote sensor that improves energy management.

This programmable thermostat does not have live chat support.

With remote sensors and a central user interface, the ecobee3 does things better than most smart thermostats. Its smart auto-adjustment function also makes it easy on the environment.

Ecobee3 Lite Review: A Good Smart Thermostat for Small Apartments

The $169 Ecobee3 Lite makes the most sense for someone who has, say, a studio or one-bedroom apartment, where there simply isn't a need to know if multiple rooms are getting enough air. The Honeywell Lyric T5 offers many of the same features and costs...

Works with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit ; Attractive interface ; Easy installation

Lacks geofencing ; Doesn’t work with remote sensors

The Ecobee3 Lite lacks some of the features of its premium cousin, but it’s a good choice for small apartments.

How the Toronto-made ecobee3 thermostat saves me almost $20 a month on utilities

Since moving through the somewhat painful process of hooking up Toronto-based ecobee's latest thermostat, the ecobee3, to my rental condo's air conditioner and furnace, I've been astounded by how much money the Wi-Fi enabled device has managed to save...

Ecobee3 Thermostat Review

The smartest of the smart thermostats, the ecobee3, can be paired with remote sensors so that all your rooms get heated or cooled properly. Plus, it's the only one that works with Apple's HomeKit.

Intuitive ; Remote sensor lets you monitor temperature in more than one room ; Works with IFTTT ; Works with HomeKit

Installation can be tricky

A remote sensor lets the Ecobee3 smart thermostat monitor the temperature in more than one room in your house.
