Can Toshiba's Portégé G710 take on the Blackberry? Jon finds out.

This is a competent handset, but it fails to offer anything new
Good screen ; Great keypad ; Built-in GPS
No Wi-Fi ; No 3G ; Limited software capabilities
A good keypad and screen make this a likeable device, let down only by its poor connectivity

They do say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, and at first glance, the G710 is distinctly BlackBerry-esque, with a full QWERTY keyboard below a central "Pearl". The body has that rubberised feel to it, so feels fairly good in the hand....
ActiveSync with Outlook, some support for your Office documents on the move, feels good in the hand
Keyboard illogical, no GPS software, battery life poor, no Wi-Fi, no 3G, slow response
The G710, sitting alongside other competitors in the smartphone arena, just simply doesn’t compete. It just feels like a tool.

If you are a business or power user then I the lack of 3G and WiFi are likely to be a bit of an issue and I suspect you’ll want to look elsewhere. But if you are looking for an inexpensive Blackberry-style Windows Mobile device and like the idea of...
