Moto Z Play review

The longer-lasting modular phone with a headphone jack

Cheapest Moto Z phone yet ; Works with all MotoMods ; Includes a 3.5mm headphone jack

Not a flagship performer ; Thicker, even without accessories ; Camera won't impress you

The Moto Z Play is meant to play, as is made clear by its headphone jack and long-lasting battery – and everyone is invited thanks to its cheaper price. Just don't expect stellar performance from the chipset or camera on this thicker Moto Z variant.

Motorola Moto Z Play review: Unbeatable battery life bettered by Mods

Motorola has had something of a turbulent time over the past few years. Having moved from its own leadership to Google and then on to Lenovo, it has struggled to compete with the other big name brands at the flagship end of the smartphone market.

Really great battery life, stock Android experience, Mods hold heaps of potential

Questionable button and square-feeling design choices

It's big, fast, and lasts a full day without even breaking a sweat, which makes the Moto Z Play one of the best options for people wanting a phone with seemingly never-ending battery life. The Incipio Mod attachment takes battery to the next next level...

Moto Z Play

Motorola's flagship Moto Z is in real danger of being shaded by its cheaper brother, the Z Play. The Lenovo-owned brand has taken what should have been a boring mid-range phone and turned it into one of the standout handsets of 2016.

Motorola Moto Z Play review

Tired of your phone dying at 7pm?

Fantastic battery life ; Quirky Mods system ; Solid screen

Outclassed and out specced by OnePlus 3 ; Camera focus is unreliable

Class-leading battery life makes this quirky modular phone far more practical than your might expect.

Moto Z Play Review: In Depth

Moto Z Play Review: We review the most affordable member of the Moto Z mobile family, the Moto Z Play, which trims the Moto Z flagship phone's specs for a more affordable asking price. The Moto Z is…

Moto Mods ; Dependable easy-to-use camera ; Excellent battery life

Limited performance ; Chunky design

The Moto Z Play is a great affordable mid-range mobile which boasts particularly strong battery life, plus strong media chops and the unique Moto Mods expandability. Of course, Moto Mods are still far from an essential feature, and we’re yet to see if...

Motorola Moto Z Play

A less expensive option for those intrigued by the Moto Mods setup, the Moto Z Play's price tag still places it out of reach for most mid-range users.

Solid design and robust body; Quick modular setup; Good camera

Benchmarks a little low; Can become expensive with Moto Mods

As a premium mid-range device, the Moto Z Play is a tad underpowered, with other lesser priced offerings producing a similar smartphone experience. If, however, you add the Moto Mod system into the mix, the Moto Z Play begins to show its worth.

Moto Z Play Review

Moto Z range lets you add Moto Mods, so you can upgrade your smartphone at a later date if you want to.

The Moto Z range is possibly one of the best solutions available in terms of giving the consumer a "modular" smartphone, where you can choose additional mods that fit your smartphone. Others offer a similar feature, for example the LG G5 lets you plug...

The Moto Z Play shows a promising future for modular handsets, but it's a mixed bag in terms of appeal

Lenovo Moto Z Play Smartphone Review

The superior Z? As the cheaper sibling of the Moto Z flagship smartphone, the Moto Z Play can also be expanded via Moto Mods. As well as a larger battery, it is also equipped with a higher resolution primary camera at a much lower price. Our test...

solid, high-quality build casing, expandable via Moto Mods, no bloatware preloaded, fast USB Type-C port, micro-SD card can be used as internal storage, good phone features, accurate touchscreen, high-contrast AMOLED panel, reliable fingerprint...

primary camera's unreliable autofocus, no Miracast support, screen with PWM flickering, headset not included, non-removable battery

As with the Moto Z, one of the main features of the Moto Z Play is its expandability via Moto Mods. According to Lenovo, these modules will be supported for at least three device generations. However, buyers have to dig deeper into their pockets first....

Moto Z Play review: Buy it for the battery life

The Moto Z Play isn't exactly a steal at $449, but its combination of great build quality, decent performance and excellent battery life make it one of the most exciting mid-range smartphones of the year. It's still a long way from perfection, though...

Fantastic battery life ; Sturdy build quality ; It has a headphone jack! ; Big screen

Not great for gaming ; Rivals have better cameras ; Pricier than competitors

It can be hard to get worked up about devices that don't aspire to be the greatest thing you'll ever slide into a pocket, but even so: The Moto Z Play won me over. Its occasional lack of horsepower can be frustrating (especially if you're into gaming),...
