There's the New Nintendo 3DS XL, 2DS, and New 2DS XL - and those are just the models on sale right now. We explain which 3DS or 2DS you should buy.

We review the New Nintendo 3DS, and compare it with the original 3DS to see if that new design makes it a worthy upgrade. Is the new design worth it?
Vastly better 3D ; Improved controls ; Packed with features
Good luck finding cheap games

Nintendo's improved the 3D on its handheld. While not much else has changed -- and it's only on sale in Japan right now -- there are enough tweaks here for serious gamers to take a look.
The New 3DS' facial tracking makes for a hugely improved 3D gaming experience. Its new analog stick is appreciated and the clip-on covers add a lot of style.
The new C Stick has poor feel though, and I can't help wishing for a more significant boost to battery life.
Nintendo's New 3DS isn't much improved overall, but that new display alone almost makes the purchase worthwhile -- or will do, once it's available outside of Japan.

3D gaming has gone handheld, and Nintendo hopes it'll fend off the smartphone horde
Behind the times in many ways but the glasses-free 3D has us spellbound

Nintendo's "New 3DS" handheld may have a confusing name, but its obsessive devotion to symmetry, intelligent enhancement of features and detailed sculpting for fit in the hand turns an adequate design into near perfection.
Super Stable 3D really works ; Symmetry of design ; Built in NFC and faster CPU for future proof gaming
SD Card only access by unscrewing ; No US release for non-XL version ; Naming continues to confuse
The New 3DS and New 3DS XL takes what was already an adequate product and makes it really shine. The physical attention to detail along with the upgraded features under the hood make this a very impressive package.

Nintendo's 3DS system first launched back in 2011 and brought with it the tantalising promise of glass-free 3D gaming on the go. However, this impressive accomplishment wasn't quite the selling point that had hoped for; first, there were scare stories...
Improved 3D screen, Changeable faceplates, Massive library of amazing games
Battery life is still disappointing, No "exclusive" games available at the moment
The 3DS may be getting on in years, but this revised offering should ensure steady sales through 2015 and hopefully give the platform renewed vigour in the face of smartphones and tablets

The New Nintendo 3DS gaming handheld packs a top-notch gaming experience into a slightly smaller, more customizable package than the New 3DS XL.
All of the excellent features of the New Nintendo 3DS XL (except with smaller screens). Interchangeable faceplates add customization options.
Same price as larger 3DS XL. Fewer choices for case colors and designs. Still difficult to find in North America.

Portable games consoles are still a thing. As the Wii U flounders, it's almost easy to forget that Nintendo has another console plugging away in a valiant effort to prop up the company's bottom...
3D effect is vastly improved ; Much faster performance ; Swappable faceplates are cool ; New control additions mostly work well
Screen tech still outdated in other ways ; Improved cameras remain unusably bad ; C-stick doesn't work for all types of games ; XL model omits faceplates

Pokemon X/Y doesn't change how it plays over Black/White, Diamond/Pearl, and so on, but it looks great and is still a fun, satisfying time-sink for your 3DS.
