Canon PowerShot SX230 HS

With a 14x optical zoom and built-in GPS this 12.1MP compact could be the perfect partner for your travels?

Image quality ; Ease of use ; Massive focal range

No ability to record Raw files ; No finger grip ; GPS is a drain on battery

The SX30 is an easy-to-use and well-specified travel compact that delivers consistently excellent image quality. While we would have liked the ability to record lossless Raw files and a proper finger grip, there is little else to fault with the camera....

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS review

The big-zoom camera that remembers where you've been

Great image quality ; Well controlled noise at high ISOs ; Very useful 14x optical zoom range ; Very good sound quality in HD movies ; Excellent range of Auto and manual exposure modes

Poor battery life ; Inconsistent results from the GPS ; Over-eager pop-up flash

Scanning the specifications for Canon's latest high-zoom travel compact, it certainly looks as if the new PowerShot SX230 HS leaves very little to be desired.

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS review

Canon is having a good year with its PowerShot and Ixus cameras. Much of it is down to its 12-megapixel back-illuminated sensor, which appears yet again in the SX230 HS and helps it deliver the best photos we've ever seen from a pocket-sized ultra-zoom...

Impeccable image quality and quick, comprehensive controls more than make up for the relatively modest zoom range

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS review

Big changes in the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS include the camera's 12-megapixel "HS System" CMOS sensor, which replaces the SX210 IS's 14-megapixel CCD sensor and adds high-speed shooting, enhanced low-light sensitivity, and 1080p video capture to the...

Canon consistently makes some of the best-performing point-and-shoot cameras in our tests, and the PowerShot SX230 HS is no exception. Its image quality puts it among the top tier of 2011's pocket-megazoom class, and the camera can be as easy to use or...

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS review

This is a practical and affordable travel compact with plenty of features to keep the more advanced user occupied. It would be nice to see a more extensive aperture range, greater ISO span and performance, as well as the inclusion of raw capture but, as...

Canon Ixus 230HS

The Canon Ixus 230HS is another offering in possibly the best range of small pocket cameras around. This is the latest Ixus offering, Canon do another ‘smaller' unit the PowerShot apart from their many offerings in the DSLR market place.

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX210 IS was one of our highest-rated pocket megazoom cameras of last year. Its successor, the PowerShot SX230 HS ($350 as of May 1, 2011), keeps its core strengths while adding a few notable features.

Very good image quality ; Manual exposure and focus controls ; Compact for a pocket megazoom camera ; Good high-speed shooting performance

Mediocre macro mode ; GPS drains battery quickly

Building on an already-excellent camera, the 14X-optical-zoom PowerShot SX230 HS adds a new sensor, 1080p video capture, high-speed shooting, and in-camera GPS to the mix.

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is a top choice if you want a long zoom lens, plus bonus features like GPS, in a camera that can fit in your pocket.

14x optical zoom lens, in a small pocketable body. Sharp images. Good low light performance. Fast. Includes GPS for geotagging photos. High-res LCD.

1080p video capture limited to 24fps. No refocusing while recording video. 16:9 widescreen LCD isn't great for shooting 4:3 still images.

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS review: Canon PowerShot SX230 HS

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS

The ; HS has good low-light photo quality for its class; excellent color; shooting options that encourage experimentation; and great-looking video quality.

Its shooting performance, though good, lags behind the competition as does its GPS functionality. The battery life is short and the overall design could use some help, too.

If you want a compact megazoom with manual controls, GPS, and excellent photo quality, the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is a good place to start.
