Onkyo makes its annual assault on our awards with yet another feature-packed AV receiver.
Smooth, powerful sound quality ; Astonishing amount of features ; Attractive new external design
Could be a little more refined with music ; No multichannel analogue inputs ; Front sockets not covered
We didn’t think it was possible for Onkyo to improve on the superb TX-SR608 but incredibly it has. Everything we loved about last year’s model can be found on the TX-NR609 but mixed in with a bunch of new features that feel like so much more than mere...

Home cinema amplifier Product of the Year 2011. The Onkyo TX-NR609 is a one-stop music and movie machine, complete with Spotify
Excellent build ; breathtaking sound quality ; intuitive menus ; fine upscaling ; integrated Spotify service
AirPlay functionality would be nice
Home cinema amplifier Product of the Year, Awards 2011. An outrageously good amp for the money.

A musically-endowed, super-featured value AV receiver
Comprehensive features ; Stunning sound quality
No analogue multichannel inputs
The Audyssey 2EQ auto setup works its magic with the supplied mic and test tones, or you can take the DIY option by delving into the onscreen set-up menu, which uses the same logical layout as last year's models but with swanky new fonts and graphics.

very year, Onkyo's home cinema hubs top the bestseller lists, appealing to punters looking for an amp that delivers maximum bang for their buck.
Comprehensive features; stunning sound quality
No analogue multichannel inputs

On the whole, Onkyo receivers and amplifiers are excellent, especially for the price. Take last year's TX-NR808 for example, a superb specimen of sonic sorcery – it's 3D ready, got more bells and whistles than a cat and dog sanctuary, and delivers a...
Hearty, tangible sound control, Spotify, Napster and Internet radio access, compatible with every format under the Sun
Audyssey Dynamic Volume ain’t all that, sister
Onkyo hasn’t become the grand poo-bah of AV receivers for nothing. It offers so much tech for such reasonable outlay that it leaves rival manufacturers lagging behind. Each generation grows in stature, performance and feature-set too, with sometimes...

Could Onkyo's TX-NR609 receiver be the best-featured audio tool on the planet? Ed Selley thinks he's found a great way to spend £500
Huge feature set, with an exciting and gutsy sound
Not very subtle; some limitations to streaming services
A remarkable product for £500 and very capable in a number of areas

Review AV receivers have made a concerted effort to keep up with TVs, consoles, set-top boxes and disc players in recent years by incorporating an Ethernet port to play your digital music collection over a network as well as internet radio and extras...
Overall the TX-NR609 is a hugely adaptable receiver that acts as a high-calibre AV hub for home cinema and HD video upscaling, as well as masterful radio and music listening, which enlivens even modest sized speaker systems. ®

The features-to-pricing ratio on the TX-NR609 could easily lead you to believe that Onkyo would had to have had cut corners somewhere on this receiver, but that's plainly not the case. From the rich, detailed sound of the 7 channel amp to the painless...

Onkyo TX-NR609
The ; 's extensive collection of built-in streaming apps makes it an excellent choice for buyers who don't need AirPlay compatibility. It also has six HDMI inputs, including a convenient front-panel input, and we appreciate Onkyo offering a Wi-Fi...
There's no built-in AirPlay support, so the Onkyo TX-NR609 wouldn't be our top choice if you have an iOS device. It also doesn't sound quite as good as the Pioneer and Denon, especially using the automatic speaker calibration.
The Onkyo TX-NR609 has six HDMI inputs and lots of built-in streaming music services, but it lacks AirPlay and doesn't sound quite as good to our ears as some competitors.
Expert review by : Tom Andry (audioholics.com)
The feature set of the $599 Onkyo TX-NR609 is very cutting edge. If you are planning on buying a receiver, either for yourself or your family this is a fantastic option.
