A surprisingly capable little Android handset at a rock-bottom price.
Low price ; Sturdy, good looking design ; Long battery life ; Good performance for the price
Camera could have been a little bit better
It may be a little more costly than competitors like Alcatel's OT-903, but the ZTE Kis more than justifies its slightly higher asking price tag thanks to its higher resolution screen, faster processor and long battery life. The price of Android phones...

Can ZTE break from its network-branded roots with this budget offering?
Decent keyboard ; Stylish design ; Loud rear speaker ; Responsive ; 12 months' free data
Very poor viewing angle ; No Flash support ; Lack of Facebook ; Tiny internal storage ; Bloatware
Coming out of network-branded obscurity is a path that many mobile phone manufacturers are taking.

Phones don't have to be expensive. The ZTE Kis - reviewed here in its festive white, veneer-like finish - is proof enough of that. Available via Virgin Media as a contract-free Pay As You Go (PAYG) purchase for a mere £49.99, plus a £10 top-up at...
Affordable, 2GB microSD storage included (expandable), good telephony experience, responsive touchscreen
Screen viewing angle isn't great, none too powerful, slow browsing and app loading
If you're in the market for a budget mobile phone then they don't come cheaper than the ZTE Kis. The white version we've reviewed here looks rather fetching too - or at least it certainly punches well beyond its £50 handset price tag. That's not to say...

Over in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress, Chinese manufacturer ZTE unleashed a barrage of new smartphones and tablets; a signal of its clear intention

The ZTE Kis is a £50 phone exclusive to Virgin Media with £10 top-up. £50, that's about a tenth of the price of a Samsung...
Zippy performance
Low internal memory

Budget phones have a place in the world, as not everyone can afford to have the latest and greatest handset. I find reviewing entry level phones harder than the rest. Quite often with no standout features you are left clutching [...

The ZTE Kis is one of those phones where you end up saying for the money it is ok. Virgin have added a bonus feature of the years worth of data, this combined with the phone would make an ideal backup phone or a phone for a non demanding child.

The Kis may be one of the cheapest smartphones that runs on Android, but it doesn't quite reach the bar, suffering from the odd performance issue.
Chunky, comfy body; cheap price for Android; reasonable budget display
Low-res screen not ideal for media; app and browser crashes
The ZTE Kis is a budget handset that tries hard to be something more – sometimes it succeeds, other times it fails. It’s nice to have a web browser at this price, and access to Google Play and its games and apps is a bonus, but the processor has...
