Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G Review: Live TV and a High Price

If you've ever had the hankering to watch live TV on your smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G (boy, what a mouthful) may be of interest to you. The Lightray, a $459 (as of August 21, 2012) LTE-compatible phone on MetroPCS's prepaid network,...

Live local TV on the go ; You can uninstall most of the preloaded software

Last year's specs ; Really high price

Even with the ability to play live TV, the Lightray's year-old specs make justifying its high price tag difficult.

Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G (MetroPCS) review: Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G (MetroPCS)

Smartphones offered by prepaid carriers tend to be bottom-of-the-barrel handsets the big cellular companies won't touch or old devices they're trying to offload in bulk. That's why it's refreshing to see the Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G for MetroPCS....

The Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G is the first U.S. phone that tunes into free digital TV. The handset boasts 4G LTE, a colorful screen, and attractive build quality.

The Galaxy S Lightray 4G is big and bulky and has a slow processor and old Android OS. Its Dyle TV service offers only four channels.

Unless you're addicted to local TV and need anytime access, the Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G isn't money well spent.

Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G (MetroPCS)

The Samsung Lightray for MetroPCS has some excellent new features, including free mobile broadcast TV, but they can't overcome the phone's very high price.

First free mobile broadcast TV phone. First MetroPCS hotspot phone. Large, high-quality screen.

Extremely expensive. Old, slow processor. Bloatware.

Conclusions The Samsung Lightray 4G has a lot going for it: the biggest screen MetroPCS offers, a sharp 8-megapixel camera, and between two and six channels of broadcast TV depending on where you live. But its early-adopter price is just out of sync...

Review: Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G for MetroPCS

The Lightray is the first handset offered by MetroPCS to include Dyle TV — live broadcast television from major networks. Mobile TV has been offered on handsets before. Is the Lightray the first to get it right?

"Worst phone I've ever had. Not worth the money."

Don't even take this phone if it is offered for free. It is way more trouble than it is worth. And it is not worth much.

Easy to use. Nice touchscreen. Good clear sound.

This phone is so slow. It takes way too long for the apps to load. And I tried the Dyle TV once. I watched the battery go down, fast. The phone freezes up and has to be set regularly.
