Huawei Ascend G300 review

Is this more than just a budget phone at a budget price?

Stylish design ; Sturdy build ; Flash support ; Decent battery ; Bright screen

Fiddly keyboard ; Occasional lag ; Stuttery web performance ; Few camera options ; Low-res video capture

Update: Vodafone UK has now released an official Android Ice Cream Sandwich update for the UK-spec Huawei Ascend G300, bringing Google's Android 4.0 software to the phone. Our review's been updated to take this into account.

Huawei Ascend G300

If you're a mobile operator that doesn't have a £100 Android handset for your pay-as-you-go customers, then you're very silly indeed. The leaders in this area are T-Mobile and Orange, who have very capable phones in this price range. Orange has the San...

Cheap, nicely designed, lovely to use, feels premium, great call quality

Screen isn't sensitive enough, processing power could be better, Vodafone junk

We love the G300. It might be a little lacking in power, but as a phone it ticks all the basic boxes. We can say, without doubt, that this is by far the best budget handset running Android that we've used. It has the feel and look of a far more...

Huawei Ascend G 300 review

The Huawei G 300 has a fantastic specification for a £100 smartphone, but our initial impression of it wasn't good. Its screen was nowhere near bright enough and it was painfully slow. After we'd turned off PowerSaver and automatic brightness the...

Huawei Ascend G 300 review

The Ascend's two-tone silver-and-white plastic case looks cheap but, crucially, it feels sturdy. At 130g and 63x10.5x122.5mm, the Huawei G 300 also feels comfortable in the hand. There's a volume rocker on the left side, a power button and headphone...

Huawei's Ascend G 300 has a few shortcomings in comparison to the best smartphones on the market - namely, a low storage capacity, an inferior build, a less-capable camera and only a single-core processor - but its performance is well above that of the...

Accustomed as we are to seeing and enjoying the best that Android has to offer, it’s difficult not to pick at the less successful parts of the G300. But viewed in the context of its price point really impresses. There are irritations such as poor touch...

Huawei Ascend G 300

Not everyone wants to splash out over £400 for a smartphone. In fact, unless you're trying to prove a point, it's safe to say that no one would pay that much for a phone if they had the choice.

It's a bit of a mystery how the Chinese phone giants - ZTE and Huawei - manage to roll out good-quality phones at such prices, although given the country's reputation for poor working conditions, the less questions asked the better probably.
