Alcatel OT-980 review

Budget Android twisted together with a QWERTY keyboard

Lots of third party apps pre-installed ; Mini qwerty keyboard is nicely made ; Good battery life ; Android 2.1 is nicely up to date ; Good web browser despite small screen

Camera is low resolution ; Abysmal shutter lag ; Not much built in memory ; Chunky build ; Small screen

Alcatel makes no bones about the aim of the OT-980. This handset is about the mass market, and its £99.95 pay-as-you-go price from Carphone Warehouse indicates that it is a pretty affordable option as far as Android is concerned.

A near flawless mapping experience with a fast and accurate A-GPS with the added bonus of Layar being pre-installed

Alcatel may have been able to keep the cost down by using a resistive touch-screen but it results in a wholly frustrating experience

Alcatel OT-980 Review

There are plenty of budget Android handsets to choose from and the Alcatel OT-980 would be pretty low down on our list

The mapping facility is excellent, with a speedy, accurate A-GPS fix and pre-loaded Layar

Alcatel may have cut costs by including a resistive touch-screen but it makes for a disappointing user experience

You may think we've been rather tough on the OT-980, especially considering its low price, but there are more and more choices available for anyone looking for an affordable Android handset and we think this latest launch from Alcatel just doesn't cut...

Alcatel OT-980 review

Alcatel is well know for its budget handsets, and it has a solid reputation in that market. The manufacturer has decided to join in with the smartphone brigade, though, and the OT-980 is the company's first Android-toting smartphone.
