Toshiba creates the lightest notebook in the world, but is it a lightweight performer?
But when it comes to LED backlight screens, Sony has had generations of T series machines to perfect the technology, with the current TZ machines sporting stunningly good displays. Unfortunately the R500 suffers from one of the problems seen in the...

Andy gets his hands on Toshiba's new ultra-portable.

A tiny lightweight machine that offers excellent usability and battery life
Lightweight ; Good battery life ; Generous connectivity ; Great feature set
Doesn't feel very robust ; Low performance ; Screen won't be to everyone's taste
A highly portable laptop, this machine is best suited to those on the move who aren't too fussed about the lack of power

A fully featured ultraportable that excels for business users and consumers
Good warranty ; Lightweight ; Decent software package ; Tough build
Pricier than many rivals
You may pay slightly more, but you do certainly get a lot for your money with this robust, highly portable and multi-featured laptop

Easily the lightest 12.1in laptop we've ever looked at
Incredibly lightweight ; Decent battery life ; Good specification
Prone to scratches ; Expensive
A remarkably light laptop, but its delicate construction is a disappointment

This year we've seen quite a number of high profile notebook launches aimed at the thin and light segment of the market and while Toshiba may not have made as many headlines with its R500 series, it's a great machine in its own right. The Toshiba...
Light, great battery life, nice design
Can run slow
The Toshiba Portégé R500-11Z is a fantastic notebook for anyone who needs to use their machine for long periods when away from mains power. Had it delivered a slightly faster performance for the price, this would have scored a slightly higher score. As...

The most remarkable thing about the Toshiba Portégé R500-U10 is its 800g weight. It's easily the lightest 12.1in laptop we've ever looked at and, for a fully functional notebook, it's an incredible piece of design.
Incredibly lightweight, Decent battery life, Good specification
Prone to scratches, Expensive
A remarkably light laptop, but its delicate construction is a disappointment

Tosh's super-small laptop is packed with all the necessary bits to run Vista at warp speed. But has it got the design clout to compete with Sony and Apple?
If the R500's design and screen had received as much love as its innards, it would have been the perfect ultraportable

Apple may get all the headlines with its super-thin MacBook Air (reviewed here), but Toshiba's Portege R500-126 trumps it in many areas.
Even in terms of price, the R500 stands up well against the Air once you configure the latter with the 64GB SSD drive, coming in at £1,761 to Apple's £2,028. If you're after a usable, super portable machine that weighs hardly anything then the Toshiba...
