Sony MDR-NC200D review

The Sony MDR-NC200D sound better with their noise-cancelling turned off, not good if you are on a noisy plane

Good noise-cancelling, snug fit

Slightly muffled and smooth sound compromises detail and bite

Good noise-cancelling, but so-so sound

Sony MDR-NC200D (Black) review

The first thing you'd probably ask me if you were going to buy these active noise-canceling headphones is whether they're better than the the Bose QuietComfort 15 or Bose QuietComfort 3 models.

The Sony MDR-NC200Ds are compact noise-canceling headphones with a creative design, deep bass, and adequate noise cancellation. The headphones fold up to fit into a convenient carrying case and can still play music without the noise cancellation engaged.

Slight, but audible hiss with noise canceling on, and the headphones lack an integrated microphone for making calls.

If you can't afford Bose's QuietComfort noise-canceling headphones, the attractively designed and more affordable Sony MDR-NC200Ds are worth your consideration.

Sony MDR-NC200D noise-cancelling headphones review

Anyone who commutes to a big city knows how loud and distracting things can get -- whether it's the whine of a bus engine, a subway car's ca-clank or

Effective noise-cancellation ; Ultra comfortable fit ; Pleasing active sound quality

Eats batteries ; Passive sound quality is so-so ; Passive noise-isolation needs improvement

Nitpicks aside, the NC200Ds delivered well enough in most aspects to warrant the $200 asking price.

Sony MDR-NC200D Digital Noise Canceling Headphones

Sony's MDR-NC200D Digital Noise Canceling Headphones auto-adjust to the ambient noise in your environment, but they suffer from distortion that should never occur in this price range.

Highly effective noise cancellation that auto-adjusts to your environment. Comfortable for long-term listening. Detachable (and thus replaceable) cable.

Distorts badly on bass-heavy songs when noise cancellation is engaged. Uses triple-A battery despite ample room for a rechargeable compartment.

Sony MDR-NC200D Noise Canceling Headphones Review

We've never been big fans of headphones that use active noise cancellation, chiefly because they mask the sound of aircraft engines, HVAC systems, computers, and other sources of ambient noise by generating noise of their own. A far better strategy, in...

Sony MDR-NC200D

It fits my small head. Folds easily Fits neatly into it's own carry case. Over all I am very pleased with my noise cancelling headphones.

Pinches my ears slightly after a while. Carry case a bit on the large side.
