Canon PowerShot SX220 HS review

12.1MP, 14x zoom and 1080p video. Could this be the only camera you need?

Incredible zoom range ; Wealth of exposure controls ; Quality images

Chromatic aberrations throughout the lens range ; Widescreen LCD only full filled in video or 16:9 modes

Canon PowerShot SX220 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX220 HS is a 14x zoom camera, the follow on from the neat PowerShot SX210 IS of last year. The travel zoom category is more competitive than ever, with all the major manufacturers having their take with some great models to choose...

Plenty of control options, will suit those who want a basic camera as well as offer plenty of functions to explore, looks great

Noise at low ISOs, quality at the far end of the zoom, flash placement cam be a little fiddly, shortcut controls take some getting used to

Overall the Canon PowerShot SX220 HS is a worthy successor to the SX210 IS that we liked last year. The range of options on offer makes it a camera that will perform for those who just want a point and shoot and those that want the benefit of a long...

Canon PowerShot SX220 HS review

With the Canon PowerShot SX220 HS, Canon has updated its likeable PowerShot SX210 superzoom camera and given it the improved high-sensitivity features that we liked so much on the chart-topping Ixus 300 HS. This change means the PowerShot now offers...

The Canon PowerShot SX220 HS is a dependable choice of compact. Largely similar to the SX210, it’s not the best-looking camera out there but does take consistently good photos. It’s sensible mid-priced choice. If GPS is a must, check out the Canon...

Canon Powershot SX260 HS86/100

Picture quality, features, compact size, value for money

A touch of purple fringing, handling, shutter delay times with flash

The Canon Powershot SX220 HS does a very good all round job. With the length of lens and range of features you have plenty of flexibility at your finger tips. The camera has no major and very few minor weaknesses and is a good choice if you are looking...

Canon PowerShot SX220 HS

Since PowerShots went to solid batteries their size can get nearer that of their other range of pocket cameras the Ixus. However they still form a bridge between the tiny Ixus and Canons high end range DSLR offerings.

Image Stabilization is now a standard feature that certainly helps with camera shake, however I am still not sure about things like Smile detection as in my tests it is really only noticing facial movement and a snarl is not a smile, still it has it...

Canon PowerShot SX220 HS review

The SX220 may be a modest revamp of its predecessor, but delivers great results at the extremes of its zoom and in low light

Impressive image quality at both ends of the zoom plus the highest ISO settings; manual controls; creative My Colors and digital filter effects; ease of use

Flash pops up each time the camera is switched on; no handgrip; drab, plastic design; integral mics pick up operational noise when recording video

While the SX220 HS is a little drab, it makes for a sensible mid-priced choice. If GPS is a must, however, check out the SX230 HS.

Canon PowerShot SX220 HS Review

Canon's PowerShot SX series of compacts have long been some of the best travel compacts on the market. But how does the latest model shape up in light of competition?

Slim body, good focal range, large LCD screen

Slight handling issues, slight image quality issues
