HP Slate 21 Pro: Android desktop and PC monitor in one

By adding an HDMI input, the low-priced HP Slate 21 Pro aims to be a "PC monitor with benefits" for small business.

HP Slate 21 review

Windows has been the lingua franca for desktop PCs for justabout as long as anyone can remember but there's no law that saysit has to be so. Enter the HP Slate 21, an all-in-one PC that runson Android. So should we think of it as a compact desktop, or...

Neat good looks, convenient all-in-one design, decent screen, slim build, low price

Screen can be laggy, Android not optimised for big screen, processor could be more powerful, no FM radio

In theory, the Slate 21 is the logical next step as Androidbecomes the default interface for more and more users -- why notextend it from the mobile to the desktop? Based on this evidencethough, it's not quite ready yet. Not enough apps are optimised...

HP’s ENORMO-SLAB: The Slate 21 MONSTER tablet

Review Hewlett-Packard's first attempt at an Android tablet, the Slate 7, was a cheap, wretched and irredeemably awful device. So when I heard that the Palm killer's follow-up fondleslab was to be a 21-inch affair, my reaction was one of incredulity...

What's a mobile OS doing on a desktop PC? Good question.

Highly versatile ; 21.5-inch, 1920x1080 ISP ; HDMI and upstream USB inputs

Boring design ; Cheap mouse and keyboard

HP Slate 21

The HP Slate 21 is a promise that Android will work for desktop PC users as well as it does for tablet users, with a nice price. The system fails on both counts.

Good range of tilt angles. Speedy boot and wake times. Don't have to worry about Windows malware. Wide viewing angles and bright screen.

8GB is too little local storage space. 1GB isn't enough RAM. Browser is optimized for mobile sites. Kludgy SD card slot. Fonts are huge. No accelerometer for games. Laggy touch screen.

Things were worse when we tried to access heavy HTML 5 websites like our sister website's Museum of Mario (, which dropped frames, had background audio issues, crashed both browsers, and generally didn't work right. We're surmising that...

Big, high-resolution screen, Good sound system, Strong performance, 25GB of online storage, Not susceptible to Windows security threats

Inherent limitations of Android outside tablets and smartphones, Some apps won't render properly, Bezel inhibits touch input near screen edges, Just 8GB onboard storage, Wired keyboard & mouse

Would we like to see a refreshed Slate 21 with the hardware quibbles addressed? Sure. But we're not sure that it's worth HP's time and resources to produce that—at least until there's some hope of a solution to the twin problems of Android-app display...

HP Slate 21 Review

Inexpensive ; Full HD touch Screen ; Very good graphics performance ; Booming audio

Screen recessed behind thick bezel ; Small internal memory ; Wired keyboard and mouse looks dated ; Limited number of optimized apps ; No parental controls

The HP Slate 21 puts Android on the big screen for a family-friendly $399 price, but that doesn’t mean you should buy this all-in-one.

HP Slate 21 Review

It may look like just any typical All-in-One but the Slate 21 is very different from other AIOs. First, it doesn't run the typical Windows OS that you would expect, but Android 4.2, complete with a 21.5-inch Full HD IPS display with touchscreen, and...

Blazing fast performance, Excellent display - crisp, bright and IPS means colours look natural, Full HD display makes this relevant for most use cases - work and entertainment, Sleek & calm design tone

Android on a desktop may be uncomfortable for some, Limited internal storage, Some games aren't updated for this device category, yet
