Dell XPS 8500 review

Although it has a sleek design, the Dell XPS 8500's cover doesn't hint at anything special about this machine. However, this desktop PC must have some way to justify its price tag. When we looked a little closer and pushed it to its limit, that...

Overall, the Dell XPS 8500 is a great desktop machine for a family that has both serious and casual computing needs. It is multifunctional enough for the gamer, the artist and the movie buff. It will fit just about anywhere and looks so inconspicuous...

Dell XPS 8500 desktop PC

A solid, all-round home PC that's good enough for a bit of gaming

Good CPU and graphics performance ; 2TB hard drive ; Plenty of RAM ; Good range of connections

Basic Wi-Fi ; No monitor for the price ; Not a great case if you like to tinker

Dell's XPS 8500 is a small desktop PC with a neat style, a good range of connectivity and fast performance. Give it a go if you want a pre-built machine from a brand name vendor that can be used for productivity, multimedia and gaming.

Dell XPS 8500

The Dell XPS 8500 brings the company's top consumer desktop into the "Ivy Bridge" generation with fast graphics and SSD storage.

Solid performance. Monstrous 3TB hard drive plus 256GB SSD. Quiet

Limited expansion room

Dell XPS 8500 (Core i7-3770, May 2012)

The Dell XPS 8500 offers too much solid-state drive and not enough raw horsepower for its price.

The ; moves to Intel's new third-generation Core i7 CPUs and features fast boot times and file access thanks to an onboard solid-state drive.

With limited ability to tweak this configuration, you're forced to choose an expensive SSD that throws off this PC's price-performance equation.

Dell makes a game effort to set the XPS 8500 apart from other performance PCs, but it overshoots with a pricey SSD, making the price hard to justify given this system's average overall performance.

Great CPU with a fair amount of ram. It is fast when it works
