Sony Alpha a5100 review

A small, well-featured compact system camera that's ideal for beginners

Built-in Wi-Fi ; Tilting, touch-sensitive screen ; Nice range of digital filters

No viewfinder ; Limited touchscreen controls ; Can feel slightly unbalanced

A well-performing camera that has just a few small let-downs. A good range of features for the beginner photographer.

Sony Alpha A5100 review: Compact-a-like

Since Sony dropped its NEX branding and blanketed its compact system camera line with the Alpha brand name, the range has not morphed dramatically, simply divided itself into different schools of thought: those seeking a compact alternative, and those...

Small yet sensible size, good picture quality overall, point-and-shoot simplicity, 180-degree tilt-angle screen for selfies

Excess menu digging, no mode dials or standard function buttons, low-light autofocus can’t be pinpointed, distortion and excessive JPEG processing qualms

The Sony A5100 won't appeal to all as it's sometimes fussy to use given its lack of control dials. If that's what you're after then look to the Sony A6000 which caters for such needs, along with the addition of a viewfinder and hotshoe which the A5100...

Sony A5100 review

A stylish camera, but the Sony A5100 has an odd mix of advanced and beginner-oriented features.

Sony A5100 review

Sony's camera is the littlest APS-C lens swapper in the world – but is it a case of small being beautiful?

Tiny and lightweight ; Great photo and video quality ; Lightning-fast autofocus

No electronic viewfinder ; Screen a tad small for touch

DSLR-quality performance in a camera a third the size of most DSLRs

Sony α5100

Dubbed a “super compact” CSC, the Sony α5100 is about half the size of a conventional DSLR. The camera holds a 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor with the same gapless on-chip lens structure as the company’s α7R. The camera delivers a very fast 0.07 second AF...

Sony Alpha a5100 review

  (Rating Hidden)

Sony's Alpha a5100 is an entry level compact system camera (CSC) with a 24.3-megapixel sensor, 3-inch tilting touchscreen and built-in wi-fi. That means plenty of camera for your money, but what about photo quality? Read on for our expert test lab...

Sony Alpha ILCE-5100 (A5100) Review

We review the compact Sony Alpha A5100, with a 24mp sensor, high speed phase-detection focus and built in Wi-Fi.

Comfortable to hold ; Compact with 16-50mm lens ; Good image quality and colour ; DRO and HDR modes ; Quick focus and shutter response ; Sony PlayMemories Apps available ; 6fps with continuous AF ; Wi-Fi and NFC ; Low noise

Picture effects are JPEG only (raw not available) ; Have to pay for additional features as "apps" that are free with other cameras: Time-lapse, Multiple-exposure, Multi Frame NR etc ; Strong noise reduction ; Kit lens not the best

The Sony Alpha A5100 is one of the more compact mirrorless cameras available with built in flash, particularly considering it has a 24megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, and fast hybrid AF focus. For a smaller mirrorless camera you could have a look at the...

Olympus PEN E-PL8 First Impressions Review

The E-PL8 valiantly takes place at the bottom of Olympus' Micro Four Thirds lineup, but don't assume that makes it low-end. We take a closer look at this refreshed entry-level shooter to see if the changes are only skin deep. Read more

Sony Alpha 5100

The Sony Alpha 5100 is quick to focus and features a tilting touch screen, but it can't shoot as fast as our favorite Sony mirrorless camera.

Fast autofocus. 5.9fps burst shooting with tracking focus. Strong high ISO performance. Tilting touch-screen display. In-body flash. Slim design. Wi-Fi with NFC. Downloadable camera apps. 1080p60 video.

No EVF or EVF add-on capability. Display only tilts up and forward. Lacks microphone input. Some apps must be purchased. Requires in-camera battery charging.

Additional functionality is available via downloadable camera apps. You'll need to connect the Alpha 5100 to a network in order to access the Sony PlayMemories store. Some apps carry premium prices, up to about $10, but others are free. One of the free...
