I have just bought this camcorder when looking for an affordable MiniDV - in order to limit the weight and size of the machine - with a PC link of some sort.

Manufacturer's Description

The MV500 and MV500i digital camcorders offer users enhanced PC connectivity and improved performance in a compact and stylish design. With their increased lens magnification, enhanced specifications and affordable price, these MV models offer outstanding cost performance. By offering varying levels of functionality and price, the MV500/MV500i provide consumers with an opportunity to select the camcorder that is most suited to their needs. This range offers the consumer an optimal combination of functionality and cost performance. Measuring just 58 x 99 x 144, these additions to the MV line-up are extremely compact and well designed. The CCD size in the MV500/MV500i has been reduced from 1/4" to 1/6", thus allowing Canon to dramatically increase the lens magnification while maintaining the compact size of the preceding MV400 Series models. With the incorporation of a high-performance Canon lens, both models provide a significant improvement in magnification capabilities. The MV500i and MV500 utilize an optical 18x/digital 360x, which are both replacing the 10x optical zoom lens of the preceding MV400 Series. These high-performance Canon zoom lenses transform distant subjects into dramatic close-ups. With the use of the analog-digital converter, users can convert analog video and audio signals, on VHS or 8 mm tape, into digital signals for real-time output from the DV terminal (IEEE 1394 interface). By selecting the shooting mode that best suits the scene, each MV500 series model adjusts internal controls to create the perfect video each time. Mode choices are Auto, Sports, Portrait, Spotlight, Sand and Snow, and Low Light as well as the Night Mode with which color shots are possible even in dim conditions. The "i" version model, MV500i, provides users with digital line-in functionality. With this feature, users can upload edited footage or graphics from their computer, or other digital devices, to the camcorder. This feature also provides the possibility to incorporate analog video data into new digital recordings.
