Philips BDP9000

The BDP9000's sleek design and friendly menus make it a good choice if you're in the market for a Blu-ray disc player.

Terrific menu design, Offers media-card playback

Audio support can be confusing, On-unit buttons are small

The BDP9000: Philips jumps into Blu-ray

Blu-ray was a little bit slow out of the gate, but after the initial quirks with the first wave of releases it has edged to almost even with HD DVD in picture quality. Other manufacturers' first-generation Blu-ray players are coming out now, including...

Slick design; excellent picture quality on Blu-ray and DVD; DVD upconversion to 480p, 720p, 1,080i, and 1,080p; very good remote; HDMI output and included cable.

Expensive; inferior support for both DTS and Dolby surround formats on DVD; expensive; no HDMI 1.3.

The Philips BDP9000 has some great design touches and excellent Blu-ray image quality, but its high price, less-comprehensive audio capabilities and the comparative affordability of the PlayStation 3 suggest that you should probably hold off.

Despite Blu-ray’s early stumbles, the Philips BDP9000 belies the notion that the format is not yet ready for prime time. The player’s color and detail are excellent, as is the sound it produces. It’s also a fine DVD spinner. And at $800, it’s the least...

Review: Philips BDP9000 Blu-ray Disc Player

Having spent some time with Samsung's first generation BD machine as well as a Playstation 3, I was eager to check out Philips' take on Blu-ray technology. The results were mixed, but there's a lot to like about this attractive high definition device.

Connected to an Epson 1080p projector (reviewed in this issue), the BDP9000 automatically switched to 1080p output after completing the "digital handshake." Video performance on the BDP9000 is roughly equivalent to what I've seen from Samsung's first...

Consumer review (epinions.com)

Did you notice that spec of dirt on this guy's shoulder?

Now that the war is over between HD and BLU-RAY … well over for now anyway! … I’ve purchased the Philips Blu-ray Disc player BDP9000 to add to my Upconverting DVD player that I already have. I knew going in that this is a First Generation ...
