Sony Bravia KDL-40HX803

As a 2D LED LCD television, it's excellent, but if you're interested in 3D, this 40in set becomes a more considered purchase.

We do understand Sony’s idea with this, to be fair. For it helps keep the 40HX803’s up-front price down, allowing people to add 3D later as their finances allow. But there’s no getting round the fact that once you’ve 3Ded it up, the 40HX803 hits a...

Sony Bravia KDL-40HX803 review

Sony's entry-level 3D TV and prudent Blu-ray player have been designed to save you money

BD deck is brilliant value for money ; 3D upgrade is a sensible option ; Solid HD performance

Screen is clearly built to a budget ; Motion blur evident ; 2D-to- 3D conversion unconvincing

Sony KDL-40HX803 review

Yes, it's a 3D television, but it's certainly the best one we've seen to date and a class-leading performer in 2D too

Exemplary 2D performance, whether from off-air or disc ; good looks and fine ergonomics ; stable 3D

But 3D images expose patchy backlighting ; viewing 3D requires more outlay, too

In 2D, it boasts performance to rival the class-leaders – it's a shame the 3D backlight issue spoils matters

Excellent handling of HD and SD content, XMB, Bravia Internet Video

2D to 3D conversion isn't great, viewing angle not great, price when you consider you have to buy the accessories

The Sony Bravia KDL-40HX803 packs in more than just 3D credentials, and outside of 3D the set mostly shines. But it does so at a price that makes 3D look rather expensive, considering you can get one of their excellent TVs of lower specs (but still...
