Samsung LE40F71B 40in LCD TV

Samsung has finally jumped on the Full HD bandwagon, but how does its first attempt at a 1,920 x 1,080 screen measure up?

Samsung LE-40F71B review

Samsung's full HD debut is in typically eye-catching fashion

Picture quality is good ; Decent price

No digital tuner

A beautiful, attractively priced TV thats just a refinement away from excellence

Samsung LE46F71 LCD television

With the launch of Samsung's Blu-ray player you're going to need a HD Ready television that can support 1080p playback if you haven't invested already. If you've gone to the trouble and expense of investing in a Samsung Blu-ray player then really...

Quality of image at 1080p, memory card reader, stylish design

Only going to get the benefit of the 1080p signal with a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player, expensive

If you've gone to the trouble and expense of investing in a Samsung Blu-ray player then really you'll need a television capable of playing back a 1080p signal otherwise you have to ask "What's the point?".

Samsung LE40F71B review

Samsung's LE40F71B is a 40-inch 1080p LCD TV that won't break the bank. It combines an attractive design with plenty of features, and its high-definition pictures look stunning

'Full HD' support; high-definition picture quality; design; memory card reader.

Lack of Freeview tuner; only two HDMI inputs.

A great budget 1080p television that won't disappoint on high-definition material but sadly lacks a built-in Freeview receiver

Samsung LE-40F71B

For a manufacturer that prides itself on being at the vanguard of new technology, it's surprising that Samsung has only just got round to shipping a Full HD LCD TV - the 40in LE-40F71B

Above-average connections, Accepts 1080p, Excellent colour

No digital tuner, Over-zealous factory settings

Not quite the best LCD in its class but a decent statement of intent from Samsung

Good value ; 1080p capable display ; 1080p input via HDMI, Component, VGA ; 9-in-2 multi-memory card slot / USB / PictBridge ; Viewing angles ; Low digital noise on image ; Sharp images with 1:1 pixel mapping (tested on VGA) ; 10 bit processing ;...

Average black level with red tint ; Black level fluctuation due to dynamic dimming (can be turned off from service menu) ; Gamma curve is distorted by processing (can be turned off from service menu) ; Poor audio ; Inaccurate color decoding ; PC...

The Samsung F71 series gives excellent value for money despite some limitations. For example, you can get a better picture if you have access to the service menu and turn off some of its processing. However, we strongly discourage this if you even have...

Samsung LA46F71BX

Excellent 1080p performance, attractive design, good range of inputs, primary colour calibration control

Image quality issues in Standard Definition and via PC connection

For watching Blu-Ray, HD-DVD movies, or playing HD games consoles, the Samsung LA46F71BX performs quite well, although its DVD playback leaves a little to be desired.
