HP Spectre x2 review

HP's upscale-feeling Spectre x2 is a hybrid that isn't afraid to go against the popular wisdom. That's an admirable quality in some areas, less so in others.

The HP Spectre x2 has a slim but sturdy design and a stiffer keyboard than Microsoft's similar Surface Pro, plus the keyboard cover is included in the base price. A mobile broadband antenna allows for easy on-the-go data.

The kickstand is hard to operate, the processors are slower than many other premium hybrids, and battery life is merely OK.

HP's slim, attractive Spectre x2 follows the road not taken by Microsoft's Surface Pro, using lower-power processors to keep the price down, as well as packing in the must-have keyboard cover.

HP Spectre x2

With its sturdy detachable keyboard, high-resolution screen, and built-in 4G LTE capability, the HP Spectre x2 slate tablet comes close to being a practical replacement for a laptop.

In-Plane Switching (IPS) screen with higher-than-1080p resolution. Two USB-C ports. 4G LTE radio. 9 hours of battery life in testing. Comes with backlit keyboard case that's rigid for easy lap typing.

No HDMI or USB 3.0 ports. Woefully soft speakers.

Conclusion The HP Spectre x2, billed as a laptop replacement, has the power and speed to run complex applications, more than 9 hours of battery life, and unlike the Microsoft Surface Pro 4, it comes with a built-in 4G LTE modem, and its keyboard cover...

This detachable 2-in-1 isn't the value proposition it could be.

Sturdy construction ; Sharp high-res display ; Passively cooled

Bulky and heavy ; So-so battery life in both modes ; Gets very warm under heavy workloads

The Spectre 13 x2's performance doesn't measure up to that of dedicated notebooks and tablets, but it can be useful in some scenarios.
