Great mid-range Chromebook despite some middling features

Solid multitasking performance ; Bright, vibrant 1440p display ; Keyboard is satisfying ; Webcam with good low light performance ; Long battery life

Speakers are subpar ; Trackpad is a pain to use ; Kickstand and keyboard cover are inconvenient to use ; On/off button is annoying

Chrome OS tablets are getting fancier but not better

HP and Lenovo have two new Chrome OS tablets that cost more and have higher-end features than prior models. But neither the Chromebook x2 11 nor Chromebook Duet 5 make a compelling case to buy a tablet over a standard clamshell Chromebook.

Manageable size for tablet use ; Fingerprint scanner ; Comes with pen in the box ; Lovely OLED screen ; Great keyboard attachment ; Long battery life

Occasionally choppy or laggy performance ; Cramped keyboard that can’t be used on a lap ; Too expensive ; Too big and unwieldy as a tablet ; No biometric authentication ; No pen included

In fact, I’d go as far as saying you shouldn’t buy the HP at all at its regular price of $600. If you see it heavily discounted — this fall, it’s dropped to as low as $350 — that’s a different conversation, but at its regular price, it’s a very poor...
