Dell Venue 8 7840

Apple's iPads capture headlines thanks to its brand, buzzwords and sales figures, so rival manufacturers have to innovate elsewhere if they want to compete. The Dell Venue 8 7840 takes charge by beating the iPad in one noteworthy category: slimness.

Three cameras add features ; Sharp, impressive screen ; Consistently good performance ; Excellent battery life

New features are gimmicky ; Camera quality is mediocre ; Ergonomic niggles throughout

Dell Venue 8 review

This budget Android tablet checks all the boxes it needs to

Nice display ; Long battery life ; Stock Android UI

Lackluster design ; Poor camera ; Weak speaker

The Dell Venue 8 is ideal for people who want a budget Android tablet without losing out on a sharp screen and long battery life.

Dell Venue 8 tablet hosts pure Android OS and attractive pricing

The 8-inch Dell Venue balances a mix of simplicity and value, with its pure Android OS, no-frills design, and steady performance.

The ; starts at an affordable $179 for 16GB of internal storage, with a microSD expansion slot, and smoothly runs a pure version of Android Jelly Bean. Its soft, grippy back makes it comfortable to hold.

The touch screen is sometimes unresponsive, large games take long to load, and battery life only lasts about a day.

The Dell Venue 8 is perfect for the budget shopper with modest needs.

Dell Venue 8 7840 Tablet Review

Dell is not a name many people would associate with quality tablets. Rather, most would associate the company with mass-produced office PCs, or at best the expensive Alienware brand. However, Dell have recently expanded into other areas, with tablets...

Gorgeously thin design.

Camera itself is poor.

Dell Venue 8 7840 review

We take a look at the worlds thinnest tablet.

Unbelievably thin and light; Gorgeous screen; In-picture measurement tools

Uneven bezels make landscape typing awkward; No Office support

The Venue 8 7840 is a killer tablet, with a great screen and stunning build quality. It's let down a little by awkward bezels and a lack of Microsoft Office, but other than that, it's a knockout.

Dell Venue 8 7000 review

Dell's Android tablet is a stunner, and packed with interesting technology

The Venue 8 7840 is packed with interesting technology. Not all of it will come in handy day-to-day – being able to measure distances within photos is a neat trick rather than an indispensable innovation. However, the core specifications, performance...

Dell Venue 8 review

Dell serves up a well-equipped budget compact tablet for £179, but the crisp screen and potent hardware are let down by software niggles

The Dell Venue 8 has all the makings of a superb compact tablet: the Intel hardware racks up impressive benchmark scores and the display gives the Nexus 7's Full HD panel a run for its money. Ultimately, though, the impressive benchmark scores don't...

Dell Venue 8

Dell's Venue 8 would be an adequate entry-level Android tablet a few months ago, but it's completely outmatched by the competition.

Tablets, for the most part, are not really meant for photography and usually take middling photos. The Venue 8′s 5-megapixel camera is no different. Most photos were noisy, indoors and out. The 2-megapixel front-facing camera is worse than your average...

Dell Venue 8 review

Dell comes back to the Android tablet world with the $180 Venue 8. It's not groundbreaking or flashy but offers decent enough performance and build quality for a reasonable price.

If Dell set out to make a decent middle of the road budget tablet with the Venue 8, it succeeded. It’s not going to wow customers with looks (unless they see the red one) or with performance. It does balance value and price well for people who have to...

Dell Venue 8

Dell's Venue 8 would be an adequate entry-level Android tablet a few months ago, but it's completely outmatched by the competition.

Inexpensive. Loud speaker. Simple design.

Poor cameras. Fuzzy display. Better options are available around the same price point.

The Venue 8 plays almost every video and audio file format out there, save for FLAC audio. The outward-facing speakers get plenty loud, but sound tinny when turned up to the maximum. There's no HDMI out, MHL, or anything else to output video to a TV....
