Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition review: a great tablet for kids

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition ticks all the right boxes

Tough rubber case with kickstand ; Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription ; Affordably priced

Fewer apps than the Apple/Google stores ; Average hardware specs ; Pushes you towards Amazon products

While the choice of apps might not be quite as good as it is with Apple and Google devices, the chunky Fire HD 8 Kids Edition has plenty to entertain and educate your kids – and Amazon throws in some very impressive content and free replacement deals...

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids review

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition is essentially a repackaged Fire HD 8 that costs £50 more – yet it's an investment more than worth making in our view.

Designed with kids first and foremost; it’s not just an adult tablet with child-friendly features tacked on or buried away ; Easy to setup and use ; Can be used as an adult tablet, by setting up additional profiles ; Yearly Kids+ subscriptions can be...

Not cheap ; Basic design ; Sluggish ; No Google apps – including YouTube Kids

Before we started writing this Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition review, we weren’t sure why anyone would buy a tablet aimed specifically at children in this way. Especially not when it costs substantially more than “adult” tablets with identical hardware...

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition review: An amazing value

The hardware is good, but Amazon's FreeTime Unlimited is the real star of the all-ages Fire HD 8 Kids Edition tablet.

This low-cost tablet is good enough for most video, game, app and social needs, plus its onboard storage is expandable via microSD card. The Kids Edition includes a wealth of extras, including deep parental controls, a no-questions-asked two-year...

The Kids Edition costs significantly more than the otherwise identical standard version. There are the same app store limitations as the other Amazon Fire tablets, and no kid is going to prefer this to a (much more expensive) iPad.

The kid-friendly version of the excellent Amazon Fire HD 8 costs a lot more, but offers a big package of worthwhile extras for preteens.

Amazon Fire HD 8: A great cheap tablet is now a better deal

Except for some new color options, Amazon's 8-inch tablet hardware remains unchanged. But its price drop makes it an even better bargain.

The latest Fire HD 8 delivers faster performance, a bigger battery and more base storage than the previous version for almost half the price. Its 8-inch screen is bright, the speakers are loud and it offers expandable microSD storage and ample parental...

Display isn't as sharp as that of the iPad Mini; to truly take advantage of what the tablet has to offer, you need an Amazon Prime membership; slow charging (takes 6 hours to fully cap battery).

Despite some small drawbacks, you just won't find a tablet with these features and performance at this price.

Good pink cover but very slow tablet

I bought this for my 2 year old but wouldn't recommend, very slow and constantly turns its self off. The pink cover however is brilliant.
