Hands-on at CES 2014: A budget Android tablet with the same screen size as an iPad mini

People expecting the Acer Iconia A1-830 to be a cheap iPad mini will likely be disappointed. It looks like an iPad mini, but the Android OS means it's nothing like an Apple tablet. It's also not particularly remarkable in terms of the specs it offers,...

Acer has updated its A1 tablet with a new version for 2014, the A1-830. It's a subtle upgrade compared to its predecessor, but there are new features that

Acer Iconia A1-830 tablet is basic, chic, and cheap

Starting at $179, the 7.9-incher is a simple yet stylish budget tablet.

The $179 ; is stylishly thin and performs consistently smoothly during casual use. With a smooth aluminum back, it feels solid yet comfortable to hold, and it has a microSD card expansion slot.

It runs an older version of Android; performance lags if multiple apps are open or if multitasking; the screen resolution is low for today's standards; it no longer offers a micro-HDMI port.

The Acer Iconia A1-830 is a sleek and simple tablet for basic use, but you need only spend $50 more to upgrade to a slate with faster performance and better features.

Acer Iconia A1-830 review

An Android tablet at a bargain price. Is it too good to be true?

Decent build quality; Surprising amount of power; Low price

Old version of Android; Poor battery life; Low-resolution screen; Bad camera

The Iconia can't match up to the Nexus 7. The screen, power levels, battery life and software will all disappoint.

Not as good as the Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HDX 7in, but Acer's second stab at a budget 7.9in tablet is a good performer for the money

Acer channels iPad Mini for latest tablet

The Acer Iconia A1-830 is set to arrive in Europe during the first quarter of 2014 and will have a recommended retail price of €169. Having had some time with the A1-830, while its specifications aren't anything special when compared to more expensive...

Acer Iconia A1-830 Android tablet review

Acer has made a great 7.9in tablet, but it lingers behind its established rivals.

Sub-$250 price ; Aluminum rear casing ; 2MP front cam with face detection

Low resolution screen

Acer has made a decent tablet with the A1-830. It looks like an Apple iPad Mini — which is a good looking tablet — and it will easily perform most tasks without any trouble. Furthermore, the $249 price is attractive.

Acer Iconia A1-830 review

The Acer Iconia A1-830 tablet is the designer handbag knock-off of tablets. It looks like a high-end purchase, but it simply -- and fashionably -- fulfills basic needs at a reasonable price. The 7.9-inch slate resembles an Apple iPad Mini at first...

Acer Iconia A1-830

The Acer Iconia A1-830 is notable for how closely it hews to the iPad mini's design, but it's also a serviceable budget-friendly Android tablet in its own right.

Solid aluminum build. Affordable. iPad-like 4:3 screen ratio.

Low-resolution display. Mediocre performance. Weak battery life.

Camera and Conclusions The 5-megapixel rear-facing camera is, like most aspects of the A1, on the low end in terms of performance. Good lighting generally yields usable photos for uploading online, but even slightly challenging lighting scenarios can...
