Sonos Port review: the only solution?

Goodbye Sonos Connect, hello Sonos Port. But is the streamer the best quality or should you consider a non-Sonos solution?

Clean, detailed sound ; Excellent control app ; Analogue and digital outputs

Sound is lightweight and insubstantial ; Struggles to organise even mildly complex recordings ; Better (and more affordable) competition

For Sonos users, the Port seems an obvious network streamer choice to make if you've got lots of the companty's kit. Problem is, there's much better competition out there, so it’s tricky to think of the circumstances in which the overall sound of the...

Sonos Port review

Is the Sonos Port, a replacement to the outgoing Sonos Connect, a worthy successor?

Clear, balanced and detailed ; Analogue and digital connections ; Class-leading app

Poor organisation and timing ; Little dynamic expression ; Severe lack of punch

The Port might be more powerful and future-proofed than the Connect it replaces, but it simply doesn't sound good enough

Sonos Port review: A mostly unworthy successor to the Sonos Connect

The soon-to-be-released Sonos S2 operating systems sounds promising, but forcing customers to replace the workhorse Sonos Connect with the inferior Sonos Port in the name of compatibility is a downright shame.

Runs on the polished, Sonos multi-room audio operating system and its best-of-breed app ; Easily adds streaming-music capabilities to any existing stereo rig ; Enhances the already rich Sonos networking options with AirPlay 2 support

Muddy sound, lacking in detail, presence, and personality ; No onboard volume control ; No Toslink digital audio output ; Much too expensive for what’s delivered

I was struck again and again by the Port’s relative absence of personality. It reminded me of the highly compressed sound that rival FM rock radio stations in the Philadelphia market took on in the progressive music era, when I myself was on the air....

Sonos Port

Allows for streaming between your Sonos speakers and other home audio components. Uncompressed audio over Wi-Fi.

Expensive. Only comes with one RCA cable.

Simple but pricey, the Sonos Port provides an easy two-way extension of your Sonos network, allowing for integration of non-Sonos stereo gear.

Did exactly what it was supposed to do - very well

Needed to link my HiFi to the new sonos speakers so I could have the same music in every room. Plugged it all in and 30 minutes later I did. Excellent!
