JBL Link 500

The JBL Link 500 review: a powerful, punchy party speaker that comes with the added benefit of Google Assistant built in.

Fun, energetic sound with plenty of detail ; Balanced sound signature ; Google Assistant built in ; Goes loud without distortion

No aux-in ; Low-level dynamics a little lacking ; Google Assistant lacking latest features

A smart speaker with audio clout, the JBL packs an engaging but considered performance. It just needs some volume to sound its best.

JBL's Link 500 is a Google Assistant smart speaker that can party

The Link 500 is a voice-enabled Wi-Fi speaker with Google Assistant that has enough bass to power your next dance party.

The Google Assistant-enabled JBL Link 500 has Google Chromecast built in and can be linked to other Link and Chromecast speakers to create a multiroom setup. It plays very loud and delivers strong bass for its size. Has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Bass is a little boomy (lacks definition).

The JBL Link 500 is a powerful, relatively compact voice-enabled multiroom wireless speaker, but its bass may be a little too boomy for some.

JBL Link 500 Review: A Google Home Alternative with Big Sound

With its size and stereo output, the $400 JBL Link 500 is capable of being the centerpiece to your smart speaker sound system. Google Assistant works well, and at the right volume, the Link 500 produces very good sound.

Well-balanced audio — if you listen loud enough ; Stereo sound with wide sound field

Lacks bass at low levels ; No wired inputs ; Can't make phone calls

The JBL Link 500 is a good large speaker with Google Assistant inside, but you'll be better served with two Sonos Ones or the Google Home Max.

JBL Link 500 Wi-Fi Speaker

JBL's Link 500 is the first voice-activated speaker I've evaluated, and after spending time with it, I'm convinced that digital-assistant technology is more than a gimmick. Not only that, I feel enthusiastic about its potential, particularly when it...
