Klipsch HD Theater 500 review

We audition another horn-based, 5.1 compact speaker system and think it's money well spent

Good detail and projection ; solid, well extended bass

Slightly rough and edgy horn tweeters don't deliver high-quality audio reproduction

If you're looking to build an affordable surround sound setup with more quality than an all-in-one system, then partner this with an entry-level AVR and enjoy

Klipsch HD Theater 500 review

The popularity of this type of compact speaker package has mostly been driven by the switch from CRTs to flatscreen TVs.

Good detail and projection; solid, well extended bass

Slightly rough and edgy horn tweeters don’t deliver high-quality audio reproduction

Klipsch HD Theater 500

On the plus side, Klipsch's horn-loaded driver technology inside the sats means you don't need a lot of power to drive them. The active subwoofer meanwhile features a fetching pica vinyl finish, curved corners and a suitably compact size, and on the...

Compact speakers; looks; great value

Some distortion at high volumes; spring clip terminals

Klipsch HD Theater 500 review: Klipsch HD Theater 500

Klipsch HD Theater 500

The ; is a compact surround-sound speaker system with four small two-way satellites, a center channel, and a 100-watt, 8-inch powered subwoofer. It can often be found online for less than $500 and sounds much better than a sound bar or HTIB.

While the HD Theater 500 sounds much better than a sound bar, its sound quality is a step behind other budget speaker packages. Also, its speakers' wire spring-clip connectors feel cheap and aren't as secure as we'd like.

The Klipsch HD Theater 500 is a stylish and compact 5.1 speaker system, but better-sounding systems are available at this price.

Sparkling 5.1-surround sound for small(ish) spaces. Spartan aesthetic also looks slick. Easy, breezy setup

Not an experienced audiophile? Tweaking the subwoofer can be more taxing than a severe IRS audit. 0 is kind of a lot, even though it’s Klipsch

Klipsch HD Theater 500 Speaker System

There are stories we tell over and over again because they never lose their power to teach us something. For example, the story of “The Three Little Pigs” and the big bad wolf teaches us not to risk our survival on houses made of straw or sticks. If...

Great Starter

Movies and electronic (techno etc) music sound fantastic on this system. Explosions hit hard, and speech comes across crystal clear. Turn on a rock song, though, and you will be left wondering why you don't even hear notes that hit hard on your car's...

Good starter kit. Bass is impressive, even in a 400 sq ft room. Gets you going with impressive clarity, so you can start watching movies the way they were meant to be heard ; Music can range from good to lacking. Most classical is amazing. I closed my...

I found the system to have very powerful highs and very powerful lows, but almost completely lacking in mid-range punch. The 2.5" woofers just don't push hard enough for a lot of songs in the rock genre. To make matters worse, the sub can't handle a...
