Audioengine A5

Audioengine A5 active desktop speakers are composed and staunchly musical. Just add an MP3 player – though they work best with stands – and you'll

Flexible spec ; smoothly built ; poised, persuasive sound

Really need to be on speaker stands to hear them at their best

Every aspect of the A5s is enjoyable, especially the way they make your MP3 player sound. Now replaced by the Audioengine A5+

Silence your audiophile mates by playing your MP3s through the Audioengine A5 – a pair of hefty speakers with built-in amps

Audioengine 5 Powered Speakers

Let's face it. Most iPod docking stations are glorified alarm clock radios. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Who doesn't have one in their bedroom? And if you've got an MP3 player it makes sense to upgrade that crusty old wood grain Sanyo, to...

Audioengine A5 amplified iPod speakers

Loudspeakers designed for digital music players are ten a penny these days but their ambitions rarely extend to the audiophile.

Audioengine's A5 speakers look good and sound even better. Hook them up to a CD or DVD player and you're in for a real treat. The company's claim that MP3 and other lossy audio formats sound great too is entirely true, but only because of the volume....

Excellent clarity and definition, able to handle immense amounts of volume, exceptional design

Slight flatness in high frequencies, limited control options

The audioengine A5 is one of the best set of speakers that we've seen, delivering exceptional performance for music and movies.

Audioengine 5 review: Audioengine 5

Audioengine 5

The powered Audioengine 5 speakers deliver phenomenal sound and offer simple, attractive styling. They feature two audio inputs and two integrated charging options (one USB port, one AC plug). Speaker wire connections mean that you can optimize stereo...

The speakers aren't cheap, and many will find them to be too large and bulky compared with PC speakers. There's no remote control, and no way to toggle between inputs.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a pair of powered stereo speakers at this price point that sounds better--and offer more flexibility--than the Audioengine 5s.

Audioengine 5

The Audioengine 5 is a very good two-speaker alternative to the Apple Hi-Fi, but doesn't have a dock.

Excellent sound quality. Integrated power supply and amplifier. Auxiliary power jack.

No digital input. Speaker wire could be a bit longer.

Audioengine A5 Speaker System

The Audioengine 5 Speaker System has us all giddy. It's the closest thing to perfect we've seen--er, heard--in awhile.

Incredible sound from small packages; built-in USB charger for your MP3 player; AC-outlet in back for a wireless audio streaming box

They're a bit large for a crowded desktop

UPDATED 2/8/2008:  While referencing this review for an upcoming review of the Audioengine A2, we noticed that the online review had the incorrect verdict (a "9" versus a "9 Kick Ass").
