inMotion IM7

A 80's style boombox for your iPod? well not quite but the latest iPod speaker system from Altec Lansing does have more than a passing resemblance to some 1980's ghetto blasters. Luckily it sounds a lot better.

Altec Lansing iM7

The Altec Lansing InMotion iM7 speaker system is beautiful to look at and listen to. It offers with a big, big sound that will fill your sitting room or office. And, as a bonus, it can be run on batteries for use outdoors, at, say, a barbecue or wherever.

When the iM7 is plugged in, it will charge the iPod while it's in the cradle. On either side of this slot, behind the protective grille, are two 1in tweeters and two 3in mid-range drivers. A 4in side-firing subwoofer and a 4in passive radiator sit...

Altec Lansing orbit MP3 (IM237)

Not to be confused with the Orbit-MP3, Altec Lansing's orbit MP3 (IM237) is a highly portable speaker designed to share music from MP3 players and notebooks. Boasting a driver that is capable of blasting music at a reasonable volume without distortion,...

Small and very portable, long-lasting battery life, reasonable audio quality ;

Heavy distortion at high volumes, cord can be hard to retrieve when wound ;

Being such a small speaker, you shouldn't expect audiophile quality. However, music isn't as tinny as you would expect from a small speaker, but there is a heavy bias towards upper mid-range frequencies, preventing a warm or balanced sound. Though the...

The iM7 is an excellent sounding unit that provides plenty of thumping bass, but at this price, there are a few factors which prevent it from ruling the roast.

Stylish and unique design, Excellent sound quality, Charges your iPod while connected to power, Range of outputs

Expensive, No nano compartment, Large and Heavy, No Display for bass and treble levels, Lack of controls on the unit itself

Altec Lansing InMotion iM7 review: Altec Lansing InMotion iM7

Altec Lansing InMotion iM7

Seamless integration with any dock-connecting iPod; eye-catching design; includes remote; charges the iPod while plugged in; works on AC power or batteries; impressive sound with thumping bass; auxiliary line-in port for use with other audio devices.

No meter display for bass, treble, or volume adjustment; a bit too bulky for ultimate portability; remote can't navigate through menus on the iPod.

The Altec Lansing iM7 offers good sound quality, flexible listening options, and handy features, making it a solid choice for any iPod owner in the market for a complementary sound system.

Altec Lansing inMotion iM7

The tube-shaped Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 is a combination Apple iPod dock and portable speaker system. The iM7 adds a little oomph to the company's inMotion line, providing room-filling sound in a stylish white and gray casing.

Analog audio inputs provide versatility. Battery or AC operation. Adjustable docking cradle fits any generation of iPod or iPod mini. Looks very cool. Full sound, with plenty of volume.

No LCD or LED on the unit or remote to indicate volume or tone-control levels. Tone controls are only on the (easily lost) wireless remote. Doesn't come with a carrying case or bag. Built-in handle is uncomfortable.

This versatile portable speaker system looks and sounds good enough to get just about any party started. The price may seem high, but you're getting plenty of power for the money.

Altec Lansing Orbit-M 360

The Orbit-M 360 hits the right notes with us; it's small, portable and gives out a decent sound as long as you don't require earth shattering levels of volume.

Simple operation. Decent sound. Connector for Sony Ericsson mobiles included.

Uses an odd number of AAA batteries. No AC power option. Obvious distortion at higher volumes.

The Orbit-M 360 is a functional and portable music speaker for iPod and mobile-phone audio enthusiasts alike.

Altec Lansing InMotion iM7

If you miss the heady 80's days of irresponsible tycoons, big hair and boomboxes, then the iM7 promises a return of sorts. Well, except for the tycoons and the big hair -- you'll have to provide those yourself.

Looks cool ; Mains or battery powered ; Excellent audio quality

No treble/bass/volume indicators ; Still defers to the iPod for some functions ; Carry handle is a bit dodgy

There's no shortage of iPod accessories including speakers on the market today, and the obvious comparison for the iM7 would have to be the Bose SoundDock. The iM7 scores over the SoundDock for better bass control and that undefinable cool Boombox...
