The Band 2 is Microsoft's second serious stab at the consumer wearable market. It aims to offer fitness fanatics a cross-platform tracker that will monitor everything from marathon runs to casual golf games.

Microsoft introduced the original Band in October 2014, bringing a device that combined an array of fitness tracking features with a few smartwatch-like functions. Despite being great in terms of functionality, it was heavily criticised for its rigid...

Loads of features, accurate activity tracking, good GPS tracking, compatible with main operating systems (Android, iOS and Windows), good notification alerts, slick interface, app offers useful insights

Uncomfortable to wear, bulky, battery life not great for an activity tracker, heart rate readings sometimes questionable, expensive, feature limitations on Android and iOS, Health app could look better

If taken on its features alone, the Microsoft Band 2 would be the smart band to beat, because it offers more than most of the competition out there.

Microsoft Band 2 review: A revamped fitness band, inside and outside

The band has a new design and enhanced software, but there are some key things Microsoft's health super-tracker still lacks.

Comfier design; lots of smartwatch-like notifications; solid heart-rate monitoring, step counting and automatic sleep tracking; built-in GPS; can track golfing, biking and running; works with Android, iOS and Windows phones.

Still offers merely adequate 48-hour battery life; expensive; workout and coaching guidance isn't helpful or clear; doesn't provide social connectivity and only makes a few health-based insights.

Microsoft's slowly improving fitness band remains seriously ambitious, but it still lacks the better battery life and helpful daily coaching needed to justify its price.
