Garmin Forerunner 201 review

Garmin Forerunner 201

Lightweight and waterproof; stores up to 5,000 laps in its memory; offers tons of customizable settings; includes software that allows you to download training data to a PC.

Frequently loses GPS signals; no heart-rate monitor; occasionally reads altitude and pace incorrectly; uses a serial connection instead of USB.

If it weren't for a few performance blips, this feature-packed personal trainer with built-in GPS would be a must-have for runners, cyclists, and outdoor sports junkies.

GPS Review: Garmin Forerunner 201 - Overview

is to bring the GPS technology with you while you are out running, hiking, on the water training, or biking. It is more to measure where you went versus where you are going - which is OK, but keep this in mind as you consider it. Overall, the concept...

"I've used this for years"

I really like my 201, and I won't replace it until it dies. But I would have thought that the price would have come down a bit since I bought mine.

Totally reliable. The battery is still like new, and doesn't drain when I put it in storage for a few months. The display and buttons are a little bit bigger than most. Screen can be illuminated. Good handlebar mount.

Much bigger than most others, so better suited to cycling than running. GPS altitude readings are consistent, but generally accurate to 25 feet (On one stretch of my ride by the ocean it always tells me I'm 12-15 feet below sea level).

Great Running Companion

I've been using the Forerunner 201 for over 5 years and it does a great job of giving pace and distance covered for each run. It also provides a history of your running sessions. The history can be downloaded to your computer via the supplied cable and...

It takes several minutes for the device to acquire GPS satelitte signals. Typically, I turn it on and set it outside a few minutes before my run to allow it to capture the GPS satelitte info

Great Training Tool for Runners

You want to train for a race? This is a great and inexpensive tool to help you log in your miles fairly accurately (more accurate than a Nike + system). The 305 is more accurate and has a faster signal aquisition, and also $200 more.

Easy to figure your milage for running log.

Loses signal with light foliage overhead coverage (would expect it if it was dense trees or a tunnel)
