PC Plus review: Planon DocuPen R700

The DocuPen is just about good enough for capturing blocks of text as images but, from our tests, it's very difficult to get accurate OCR transcriptions from books or magazines, which is surely one of its main uses.

Planon - DocuPen R700

A scanner is an A4-sized gadget which sits on your desk and breaks the spine of any book you try to scan pages from, right? It's permanently connected to your PC and is too bulky to ...

This is so nearly a great evolution of the scanner. It's independent, stores images itself and recharges through any USB port. The only problem is that it's hard to OCR images and impossible to know at scan-time if your scans are rubbish.

Planon System Solutions DocuPen R700 review

Planon DocuPen R700 The Planon DocuPen R700 won't win any imaging-quality awards, but if you absolutely must scan documents on the road, this is a handy device to pack in your bag. We have to admit, there are definitely instances where being able to...

Easy to use; ultraportable; scans fast.

Poor scan quality; expensive; doesn't work with Macs; scans in black and white only; text is illegible at small sizes; middling OCR software.

If you need an ultralight scanner that slips inside a deep pocket, dig deep into those pockets to splurge on the DocuPen.

DocuPen R-700

Too fast, too slow; there's no "just right" with the DocuPen

Completely portable, recharegable Lithium- Ion battery, lightweight at 2oz.

Below-average quality scans, poor Mac support, have to hold down pinching power button to use.

A different scanner

Indispensable if you want to go paper-free

There is a lot to love and hate about this scanner. You'll love the fact that you can scan documents anywhere, without having your computer with you, on battery power. You'll hate the quality of the scans. You'll love how fast it is to use, even ...

Portability (why else would you buy it?) Batteries charged via USB.

Documentation not comprehensive or current. Pricey.
