Panasonic DMR-HW220

Superb 1TB Freeview PVR with smart features galore.

Impressive picture quality ; Revamped EPG ; Large hard-disk with external HDD back-up

Can’t play MKV over network ; Uninspiring design ; Some menus need a revamp ; Viera Connect not up to standard of rivals

Panasonic DMR-HW220 review

Timeshifting isn't the only thing the Panasonic DMR-HW220 connected PVR can do

Outstanding image quality ; Generous 1TB hard drive ; Lots of ‘net TV services

Bulky old-skool design ; Button-festooned remote ; Limited file support on LAN

Panasonic DMR-HW220 review

This business-like box is as much about the Panasonic Smart Viera ecosystem as it is about time-shifting X-Factor – and that's a good thing. For those wanting a connected TV experience without having to trade in their older TV, it's a great solution.

1TB hard drive; Smart Viera online content portal; multimedia file playback; surround sound support

You can’t take the box online if it's recording; cluttered remote; UI a little slow; SD iteration of YouTube

Panasonic DMR-HW220

Panasonic DMR-HW220 set top box

Panasonic's first PVR is impressively easy to use

Fast operation ; Accessible interface ; Plenty of hard drive space

VIERA Connect is inferior to Samsung and LG

The DMR-HW220 is the first dedicated set-top box from Panasonic, and it handles basic set-top box duties very well. Its Internet features are reasonable, but more useful is its capacious hard drive and smooth and simple operation.

Not as expected

I have had this unit for 3 years and today I have found that the tuner stopped working. This model was not ready to be offered on the market. I managed to connect it to internet wifi but I could not make it browse internet or show netflix, though they...

Below acceptable.

need a TV and the box remote to make watching TV possible. Thirdly, when you record something and delete it, you only get a portion of the used space returned. It's a joke, and Panasonic aren't interested in helping me at all. Finally, that Viera...

It's a Personal Video Recorder that's better than Topfield but not as fancy as Foxtel's IQ

as fancy as Foxtel or Austar IQ's (I have subscribed to both in the past at a cost). Note: I don't have the receipt as it's with her in Sydney for warranty purposes, but as I did the research for the purchase, my records show: $347 Harvey Norman,...

Easy Peasy Setup and Intuitive to Use

an connect to the internet with either a lead or wirelessly. This unit cost us $389. So far, very pleased that we spent that bit extra to get a PVR that looks like it will be headache free. We went straight from a VCR which is very basic so this seems...

Easy no fuss setup and it is easy to figure out how to use it. Nice clear picture. Love the fast forward button. Love the fact it can record two shows while we watch a third all at the same time.

The antennae cord supplied is only about 1 metre which is too short for our TV cabinet. You also have to buy the HDMI lead if that is what you are going to be using. And you can only record 7 days ahead.
