Dish Network ViP HD DVR review: Dish Network ViP HD DVR

Dish Network ViP722

High capacity; receives and records new MPEG-4 AVC programming, including local and other HD channels not available on older receivers; dual-output mode for secondary TV; can record up to three HD shows simultaneously while playing back a fourth;...

Generally lighter selection of local HD and sports channels than cable; annoying interstitial pay-per-view page; defaults to "all episodes" for EPG-initiated recordings; uglier EPG and menu system than TiVo HD and DirecTV; no built-in networking...

The Dish Network ViP622 and 722 are among the most fully featured and versatile high-def DVRs you can buy today.

Super Bowl Tech Accessories

The high-definition digital video recorder (DVR) has become an essential ingredient of today's home-entertainment setup, enjoying an important place alongside the mighty HDTV, which is, of course, the centerpiece. And no other manufacturer's HD DVRs...

Excellent interface. Large hard drive. Expandable storage via USB. Can record up to three programs simultaneously. Records and plays back MPEG-4 HD content.

Offers fewer local HD channels than competitors such as DirectTV. Existing Dish Network customers need to pay $200 to upgrade (before a $100 mail-in rebate), while new customers receive the box free.

The ViP722 DVR box from Dish Network is similar to last year's versatile, cutting-edge ViP622 model, but it sports a new look and offers increased storage. In a nutshell, this satellite set-top box is just more of an already good thing.

DISH Network ViP 722 Receiver/DVR Review

DISH Network brings an interesting take on the DVR with the ViP 722 satellite receiver. This DVR is a dual-tuner, two-TV receiver that allows 55 hours of high definition record time, or 350 hours of standard definition (or a combination of both)....

Dual independent tuners/TVs (HD/SD or PIP) ; Supports a backfeed for whole-home distribution ; Record up to 55 hours of HD programming ; Integrated ATSC and Dish program guide ; Includes RF remote for Zone 2

Slow on-demand functions

Dish Network VIP 722 DVR Preview

The slightly updated Dish Network ViP722 HD-DVR was on hand for our viewing pleasure and we noted that the primary improvement was in the storage department.

Dish Network DuoDVR ViP722K reviewed by ConsumerSearch, which notes pros and cons, along with reviews and ratings for the Dish Network DuoDVR ViP722K and comparisons to other DVRs - Digital Video Recorders

Two satellite tuners; Can feed separate programs to two TVs; Commercial skip; Pause, rewind and fast-forward live TV; Can add a hard drive for extra storage; Can be programmed remotely via a web browser or mobile phone

Unattractive programming guide; User interface is not as elegant as TiVo's; Over-the-air reception now requires extra-cost module; Adding a hard drive requires extra fee

Dish Network ViP722 HD DVR

I have owned virtually every single Dish Network HD DVR model since the company first began offering them, and its latest ViP722 is the company's most ambitious offering to date. I've been using the 722 for months now in my front projection home...

This is by far the best-performing and most fully featured HD DVR on the market. The external hard drive capability will be a boon to dedicated couch potatoes. With 1TB external hard drives available that cost well under $150, expanding the box’s...
