Quad 99 review

Strong and powerful, with a wonderful sound and beautiful build

Even-handed sonic delivery with strong dynamics and fine resolution ; flexible ; good build ; compact

Imprecise controls ; display not clear

Minor ergonomic concerns aside, this is a class performer that works superbly

Quad 99CD-S

The 99 series from Quad includes two CD players, and you'll have trouble distinguishing them from the front. It's another story from the back, as the more expensive 99CD-P adds inputs and other goodies...

Rises to the challange ofcomplex music

Loses focus with quieter music

Despite its small size, this player revels in big music where its fearless presentation is unhindered by any kind of constriction

Quad 99 CD-P2

The first important item in the feature list is something which potentially carries great appeal for purists - as well as having the usual fixed voltage stereo phono output on the back, there's also a variable gain output which is operated with the...

Massive room-filling sound stage - if you can imagine sound on zoom, this is it. Good detail, timing and superb dynamics. Variable volume output is a brilliant concept for those who want it and provision of the DAC as an accessory is a stroke of genius...

Possibly a little too exuberant in its delivery. Build quality erring towards the lightweight. Front panel and remote control lack charisma

Quad 99 and 909

With its blue steel livery and statuesque bulk, the 909 screams ?power!? to anyone who?ll listen, while the svelte and sleek 99 will look smart in any company if you want to park its beefy brother out of sight...

Good value, excellent detail and superb midrange delivery ;

Heavy and brutal looking, slight lack of definition at tonal extremes ; There are two main advantages that pre/power amp combinations have over their integrated counterparts. The technical reason is that by separating the power output from the...

The 99 pre and 909 power amps are obviously designed to work and look best together, though they can of course be partnered with other components quite easily. The 99 offers a remote, built-in phono stage for vinyl junkies and the option of its 'love...

QUAD 99 Compact Disc Player Reviewed

Part of Quad's current generation of electronics, the 99 CD player has fixed and variable outputs, so you can use it sans a preamp, or couple it with the most excellent Quad 99 preamp. Sonic results will be liquid, musical, and worthy of the Quad...

Quad 99/11L system

Quad has long been a cornerstone of the British Hi-fi industry. Founded in 1936 by Peter Walker, they started off making public address equipment. Historical highlights were the first commercially available full range electrostatic loudspeaker and...

Like many companies in the hi-fi field, Quad met with difficult times in the mid 90s. Eventually Quad came under the control of the Hong Kong based International Audio Group, complete with new manufacturing facilities in China

Players/Recorders: CD Players: Quad 99 CDP

Outfitted with a volume control (operable only from the remote), the 99-CDP is in fact designed to function as a minimalist preamplifier for a digitally-based system comprising DAB tuners, minidisc players, computers, cable or satellite television...

Preamps, Amps, & Controllers: Monoblock & Stereo Power Amplifiers: Quad 99 Series Amp

The amplifier is simplicity itself, the front panels adorned with nothing but a tiny light that indicates on, off, or standby, with good but ordinary RCA jacks and binding posts on the rear and removeable IEC power cords. A trip-circuit shuts them down...

QUAD 99 PRE AMPLIFIER

Good overall sound, excellent phono input, very clever tone controls (I've always liked the Quad "Tilt" control and this iteration of it is very neatly done).

Haven't found any yet - display is maybe a bit bright for comfort, but it's a small point.
