Onkyo TX-NR525 review

Onkyo has resisted adding support for Apple's AirPlay standard to its AV receivers, but historically the company has made up for that shortcoming by offering more HDMI inputs for significantly less than the other guys. The Onkyo TX-NR525 ($400 street)...

The Onkyo TX-NR525 is a solid value, especially considering its affordable wireless accessories for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It also has six HDMI inputs, plus extensive networking features, including onboard streaming-audio support for Pandora, Spotify,...

For $50 more, Sony's STR-DN840 offers built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirPlay. And while the option to use accessories is nice, you can only use one at a time.

Onkyo's TX-NR525 is a solid AV receiver value, especially considering its affordable accessories, but competitors offer integrated wireless features for not much more.

Falls short

It's basically a value receiver and not a whole lot more. For the price point, my advice would be to ditch the receiver and buy a sound bar. The sound quality is very underwhelming. There are some fancy automatic sound settings that really don't bring...

Price point ; Number of HDMI inputs ; Android Application (don't get too excited...) ; Ethernet connection

Poor sound quality ; Android Application is frustrating and slow ; No included Ethernet cable

Very nice unit

If it is under $200 and 5.2 is what you want go for it!

While I was hesitant when I purchased this last time this sub $200 deal was around due to some of the negative reviews I bit the bullet and gave it a shot. It was the right choice ; I've had this over a year, followed all the firmware upgrade...
