Harman Kardon AVR 630

This receiver packs the latest futuristic features and great sound into a stylish package that includes Harman Kardon's extensive bass-management and video-upconversion features.

Supports 7.1 channels ; True high-end style and feel ; SACD/DVD-A bass-management system ; Adjustable lip-synch delay ; Dolby headphone processing

Expensive ; No A/B speaker switching

And finally, we confirmed the effectiveness of the AVR 630's bass management with David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust DVD-Audio disc. The receiver nicely integrated the bass from our wee satellites and big subwoofer--certainly better than we've heard before...

Receivers, Tuners, and Integrated Amps: Audio/Video Receivers: Harman Kardon AVR 630

The AVR 630 is Harman Kardon's next-to-the-top-of-the-line 7.1-channel AVR. It puts out 75Wpc in multichannel mode and 95Wpc in stereo. In looks, the 630 is a work of art-from its silver brushed-aluminum chassis to its large glossy black faceplate, the...

Harman/Kardon AVR 630 Receiver

If you're shopping for a deal, you might find one on this stylish two-tone receiver. Its list price is not the lowest in this group. Search the Internet, though, and you'll find good deals on the AVR 630 from authorized dealers. (To make sure you buy...

Harman/Kardon AVR 630 Receiver

Basic black seems to be losing its luster among trend-conscious manufacturers. For disappearing in the dark, it's the strongest color; however, for users of front-panel controls, it's often the most frustrating. H/K compromises by sticking with black...

All surround receivers-including the four reviewed here-are subject to some degree of clipping when asked to produce more power (aka higher volume levels) than they're capable of. Even if you are routing all bass below 100 Hz to your subwoofer (I...

Despite the profusion of autofocus, auto-everything SLRs that offer some significant technological innovations, there still remains a demand for good bare-bones camera designs.

MUSCULAR, POWERFUL SOUND BUT OVERPRICED

I auditioned offerings from Rotel, Denon and Arcam that were all around the same pricepoint. The high current HK drove my tricky M&Ks (4 0hms) more convincingly than any of the others, but build quality on the outside is not so convinving. But I will...

Clear, dynamic, high current design that made others at this pricepoint sound a bit woolly. Especially in 2 channel mode with a regular CD player.

Build quality a bit suspect. Casework and knobs feel a bit like something that would cost a quarter of the price.

This is an av AMPlifier not a WATTifier

Superb in combination with the M&Ks and a REL sub. Not sure it works as well with other small speakers in the same price range. I auditioned a few, but this combination was perfect for my ears. Oh, and chest. You can really feel this system.

This is a high current device that drives my tricky M&Ks (4 Ohms)with gusto. Does quiet and loud with equal conviction. Sound stage is very convincing. And, the best dialogue I have heard from an AV amp of this price. Sounds pretty good in stereo too.

Construction a bit gimmicky and maybe flimsy in places.
