Cambridge Audio Azur 840C

It's not easy to do something really new with CD replay, especially at a sensible price, but Cambridge seems to have achieved it with the 840C. The big feature here is 384kHz upsampling...

384KHz upsampling, Well-balanced sound

No one area of particular excellence

An undemonstrative player that nevertheless admirably combines tonal neutrality, effortless detail and a fine sense of rhythm and timing

Cambridge Audio Azur 840C

In action the 840C is a revealing, even sizzling player. It has a strong sense of definition and plenty of welly when it's called for. Not as refined as the Cyrus, it nonetheless gives that player a run for its money with a tight and nimble bass and a...

A ton of features for the money and a well rounded, precise and solid sound to boot

For the money, none

Cambridge Audio Azur 840E preamplifier & 840W bridged monoblock amplifiers - various

Connections:12v trigger in/out, control bus in/out, IR emitter in.

Would you believe that the amp is just as feature-laden? When it has indicators on the front for STANDBY/ON, OUTPUT, PROTECTION, CLIPPING, BRIDGED, and MONO it's going to have some extra doodads on the back. Those doodads are comprised of easily...

Cambridge Audio Azur 840C CD player - 1499.00

The CD player is on the way to becoming a relic.

Cambridge Audio Azur 840C Review Update: The week of November 17th, 2008 saw one of my purchased 840C players returned to Cambridge Audio for warranty repair. It seems the player was not locking on to a digital signal sent from the Ayon CD-3...

Cambridge Audio Azur 840C CD Player

Such an impressive feature and technology list, however, tells you nothing about how the player sounds. To know that, you must listen. Dropping the 840C into my reference system, I was stunned by its overall sound quality. I knew immediately that the...

The Cambridge 840C CD player delivers the best CD playback I've heard from any player under $5k-and it costs $1499. Not only is the 840C easily the greatest value in digital sources in my experience, it must be considered one of the greatest bargains...

Cambridge Audio Azur 840C

This Cambridge Audio CD player (Azur 840C) is pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Fine tonality, fabulous bass quality, great detail

A very slight smudging of images

There isn't a CD player at the price that offers anywhere near as much.

VERY GOOD FOR THE MONEY.

This is a stunning player for the money. It supplanted a Meridian 506 in my system. The 840c is heavy and well built. The CD drawer is a little basic but overall it feels like quality and is certainly a lot for the list price. The sound is neutral...

An excellent DAC that you can use for your DAB radio and Squeezebox ; Well built

A little plain looking ; Doesn't play MP3s natively

CLEVER AND REFINED NOISE REDUCTION

Neutral but detailed sound that can, to some degree, be tailored to taste and other equipment.

These comments are based upon the use of the balanced outputs of the 840c into a Krell KAV 400xi and Martin Logan Advantage electrostatic speakers. The 840c's dither is set to "off" (do play with the circuit, its educational and sometimes useful,...

Does not have a sealed transport and is prone to dust in the laser assembly area. Do not stack the 840c to create the chimney effect

FABULOUS CLARITY

I have wondered whether the 740C would have been good enough for my ear because this certainly exceeds all my expectations and I think is almost too good for me.

Utterly professional and unswervingly true across all ranges and for all types of music. I'm matched with the 840A sending balanced output to Dynaudio 140's and quite honestly when real musicians hear it they are gobsmacked.

You will throw away your bad recordings and hastily copied disks because it shows them up.
