Performance

Optoma HD72

Inexpensive for a 720p-resolution DLP projector; accurate color decoding; clean video processing with 2:3 pull-down; compact design.

Somewhat inaccurate primary colors; poor gamma introduces some discoloration and hampers shadow detail.

The best value in front projection in its class, the Optoma HD72 is a surprisingly good performer at a ridiculously low price.

Optoma HD72 DLP Projector Review

We were first introduced to the new Optoma HD72 in January at the 2006 Consumer Electronic Show. We were very interested in conducting a review of this projector based on what we viewed at the Optoma

Price ; Excellent detail, black level and color ; Very good internal video processor ; Every input you would need ; Quiet ; Modern styling ; Excellent warranty including a no dead pixel policy

Remote has sporadic operation ; Standby light blinks on/off until hard shut down ; Excessive offset may not be suitable for some installations ; Small amount of light leakage from side of projector

Optoma HD72

Among the best value in front projection in its class, the Optoma HD72 is a surprisingly good performer at a price that represents reasonable value.

Inexpensive for a 720p-resolution DLP projector ; Accurate colour decoding ; Clean video processing with 2:3 pull-down ; Compact design

Somewhat inaccurate primary colours ; Poor gamma introduces some discolouration and hampers shadow detail

Both the HDMI and component-video inputs delivered full 1,280x720 resolution from our Sencore VP403 HD signal generator. HD material from our Time Warner cable system was crisp, sharp and full of rich colours. Shadow detail in dark concert footage from...

Optoma HD72 DLP Projector: Short Take

There's no pretense here of state-of-the-art 720p DLP performance on-the-cheap, but the images I saw from my review sample of the budget priced Optoma HD72 were surprisingly impressive. While it's bright enough for use with a little ambient lighting,...

Of particular note there is also a large standard thread recepticle for a tripod. This allows some interesting options. If you need to shel mount up high (which means the projector is inverted, this could allow an extremely small, and neat alternative...

Limited range on zoom lens (typical for DLP projectors in this class/price range) ; No lens shift (also typical for DLP projectors in this class/price range) ; Remote control is weak, in terms of range ; Using zoom control knocks projector out of...

Image quality is excellent, black levels are very good, and the color dynamics (thanks to TI's "BrilliantColor" I assume?) are particularly impressive

When the new crop of high contrast LCD 720p projectors appeared last fall we knew it would not take long for makers of DLP products to show an aggressive response. Out on the leading edge of this movement is the Optoma HD72, a newly released 1280x768...

Optoma HD72

One of the biggest barriers to the wider use of front projectors for personal home theaters, the astronomical price of the projector itself, is steadily being eroded away. As the technology evolves, the entry-level price of many high definition...

The picture is striking for such an affordable projector. The colors were rich and well saturated. Setting TI's Brilliant Color in the middle produced the most pleasing results. Another control in the advanced menu, TrueVivid added some intensity to...
