Mitsubishi DLP projector short on light

We appreciated many aspects of the Mitsibishi HC7900DW DLP projector's picture, but its limited light output, and thus limited versatility, hurt its value proposition.

The ; projector can produce very good pictures in a dark room; exhibits deep-enough black levels and accurate color in bright areas; has lots of viable video-processing options; and its operation is quiet.

More expensive than similarly performing projectors; relatively dim; black and near-dark areas are slightly green; must buy separate emitter for 3D; no 3D glasses included.

Although its dark-room picture quality rivals projectors near its price, the Mitsubishi HC7900DW's low light output contributes to making it a worse value.

A brighter than average 701 calibrated measured lumens in "best" mode, is enough for a reasonably large screen for movie viewing in a fully light controlled environment, or good viewing on 100" with modest ambient light ; Excellent overall color, and...

Could be brighter in "brightest modes ; Actual "brightest" measured mode - is unwatchable (but others come close) ; Lamp life is below average if you run at full power for the most brightness ; Black level performance could be further improved (though...

I have mixed feelings about Mitsubishi's switch from black case last year, to white this year. I find it a better theater projector (where ambient lighting is under your control), than a family room projector, but, any way I slice it, this DLP...
