Mitsubishi HC5000 review: Mitsubishi HC5000

Mitsubishi HC5000

Relatively inexpensive for a 1080p projector; accurate color decoding; solid video processing; well-rounded feature package.

Iris settings are not good enough for dedicated darkened theater setups, and consequently blacks are not as deep as the best 1080p projectors.

Although stylish and affordable for a 1080p projector, the Mitsubishi HC5000's black level failings prevent it from earning our recommendation.

Mitsubishi HC5000 Projector Review

In a sea of new 1080p projectors being released this year, Mitsubishi has a distinctive product that sets it apart as a leader. The C2Fine technology renders an incredible picture and does indeed

VERY quiet ; No screen door effect ; Motorized lens shift, zoom, and focus ; Backlit remote ; Native 1080p/24/60 support ; HDMI 1.3 with 480i support

Slow, noticeable, undefeatable auto-iris ; Weak remote signal ; HDMI didn't pass Blacker-than-black ; Cumbersome menu system ; Limited horizontal lens shift range

Mitsubishi HC5000

Mitsubish's HC5000 isn't the prettiest projector on the block, but the images it delivers certainly are.

Superb visual clarity

Rather plain physical design ; Slightly unfriendly menu design ; Some motorized functions are a bit jumpy

The bulb within the HC5000 is rated for up to 5000 hours of usage time -- and the projector keeps track as many do -- with a very inexpensive replacement cost of AU$599. That works out to about 12c per viewing hour if the bulb lasts to full capacity,...

Mitsubishi HC5000 1080p Front Projector

Normally, a new performance plateau is defined by products at the highest possible prices, followed by less expensive models as more consumers fund larger manufacturing volumes. For some reason, however, this is not the case with 1080p front...

Mitsubishi HC5000

There was a time when I said that LCD was dead. It had plateaued and other display technologies would superceded its obvious limitations. That was 2000. And it shows what I know

Today, LCD is alive and well and the new range of 1080p LCD based projectors are going places I previously didn't think possible

Mitsubishi HC5000 Three-chip LCD projector

No, the compelling story of CEDIA 2006 in front projection was the growing number of three-chip LCD and LCoS 1080p projectors that were well south of $10K. Standing out tall among these was Mitsubishi's HC5000, not only because it was one of the least...
