The Photosmart 8250 boasts HP's new Scaleable Printing Technology. But does it actually offer any real world benefits? Simon Williams finds out.

The 8250 connects via card slots and PictBridge can print up to A4 and even onto special panoramic paper
A big step forward in efficient ink usage, and a good printer, too

This full-featured printer is fast and well designed, but print quality falls short of other models.
Fast printing speeds, 2.5-inch color LCD for previewing photos
Text looked slate gray and blotted, Glossy photos looked oversaturated
The Photosmart 8250 has much to offer, including fast printing speeds, but it falls short on print quality.

Fast at printing photos, the 8250 offers extensive software, but photo print quality was lower than on the other models.

The HP Photosmart 8250, a replacement for the Photosmart 8450 , retains the 4,800x1,200dpi resolution, the long-life Vivera inks, and the relatively speedy printing of its predecessor but replaces the old print engine with a radically redesigned one....
Economical and fast when using the default settings; robust standalone operation; multiple connectivity options; Mac and Windows compatible.
Grainy prints; large and heavy.
Speed and economy make the HP Photosmart 8250 a reasonable choice for family photo printing.

Even a quick glance at the HP Photosmart 8250 ($199.99 direct) makes it clear that this is a photo printer first. If the PictBridge connector for cameras and the slots for memory cards don't give it away, the 2.5-inch color LCD for previewing photos or...
High-quality output. Good performance. Separate 4- by 6-inch tray makes it easy to switch between printing letter-size documents and 4- by 6-inch photos
Text quality, while good, is low for a photo ink jet. Photos are water- and smudge-resistant, not waterproof or smudgeproof
For photos, the HP Photosmart 8250 Printer offers fast printing and quality at the high end of very good, making it an excellent choice as a low cost photo printer. It also handles text and graphics well, making it a good pick as a single, all-purpose...

Fast, reliable, compact, excellent quality, and cheap
None at all ;
Will provide you with store quality prints for a low low price.

Though innovative, the Photosmart 8250 photo printer's key new features were a little disappointing. Fast speeds and durability were made less impressive by the quality of the printed output.
Very good print quality on certain media ; can print directly from many types of camera memory cards ; individual ink tanks are efficient
Prints on the new Advanced photo paper were unimpressive ; highest settings are required to remove visible dot patterns
The six Vivera inks in this printer differ substantially from the Vivera inks made for other Photosmart printers, which can print using up to nine inks from three cartridges. These are designed to work with HP's new Advanced Photo Paper, which promises...
