The iHP-120 is a hard disk based MP3 player in the same mould as the Apple iPod and Philips HDD100. With 20GB of storage and loads of features it should give the competition a run for its money.

The Linux-powered iRiver PMP-120 is an alternative to iRiver's own PMC-120, which is similar but based on Microsoft Portable Media Center.

iRiver PMC-120

The iRiver PMC-120 is a solid start in the PMC market.

Included kickstand for video watching. Proprietary base connector cable included.

Not quite as well-developed as the Creative Zen PMC. Output quality to TV is less than desirable.

This device isn't as pretty or easy to use as the Apple iPod, but when it comes to features, the iRiver iHP-120 delivers. The 20GB player offers an FM radio tuner, optical in and out jacks, and more than twice the battery life of the iPodfor the same...

Analog and digital optical inputs/outputs; 20GB hard drive; line-in and voice recording; in-line remote with LCD; long battery life; FM tuner; high-resolution display; line out can be used as a second headphone jack.

Display text is small; slow scrolling; slight learning curve; limited Mac compatibility.

Feature-hungry music fans will find their appetites whetted by this supercharged, high-capacity portable music machine.
