The idea behind the player is brilliant, but the device feels too first-generation. It’s best to wait until they’re smaller and cheaper, or when a decent PDA can take a bolt-on 20GB hard drive.

Archos AV300 review: Archos AV300

Plays and records audio and video; nice image quality; excellent user interface; wireless remote; interfaces with standard TVs and audio equipment; stores and displays digital photos; 20GB storage capacity.

Heavier and bulkier than hard drive-based MP3 players; no carrying case; you must convert most downloaded video to play it.

This fine portable entertainment device proves that you can take it all with you.

The face of the AV player features 5 mostly unmarked buttons -- two up top are marked with an 0 and an X, while the rest are blank. Even without the manual, we were able to figure out quickly that the 0 is your "on/select/yes" main functionality...
