The Archos AV 500 is a portable media player with a big screen, big hard-drive capacity and big battery life – all fitting in the palm of your hand
The Archos AV500 will play or record movies or music anywhere, any time, with proper results. Pure class

A classic track for a PMP with a problem staying upright, perhaps that's why all the publicity shots always show someone holding the Archos AV500? We put the DVR though it's paces and see if stacks up as a sensible purchase.

A hands-on review of the Archos AV500 has been posted (in French) to the generationmp3 forum by Edrysark. Lots of pr0n and a few side-by-side shots with the iRiver H320, Archos Gmini 402, and PSP. The author likes the "very luminous" 4-inch screen,...

Archos has made the Jaguar of portable video recorders, with its new Archos AV 500. With a sleek brushed-aluminum casing, a slim profile, and a very sharp 4-inch widescreen LCD, the AV 500 is definitely set to impress. Its audio capabilities are music...
A/V recording and playback quality is excellent. Compact and lightweight. LCD is bright and sharp. Easy to use. Provides plenty of control. Removable battery.
Video recording requires using the TV Docking Pod. No OGG or FLAC support. Can't watch slide shows with music playing.
Start saving your pennies: This portable media player/recorder is worth its high price.

If we could choose only one PVP, it'd be the Archos AV500 Mobile DVR.
Nice wide-screen LCD with great viewing angles ; Compact enough to fit in a pocket ; Supports PlaysForSure audio and video ; Superb audio quality ; Records audio and video from external sources at scheduled times ; Excellent battery life ; Good printed...
One pricey beast ; Controls can take a little getting used to ; Can't multitask ; Lacks a kickstand or carrying case ; No equaliser ; Earbuds are uncomfortable ; Doesn't have an iTunes-like source for video downloads
The Archos AV500 boots up in just a few seconds and snaps between menus with no noticeable delay. It's also relatively speedy at file transfers, though its lab score of 5.82MB per second could best be described as average. Thankfully, there's nothing...

The SmartHouse team auditions a pocket theatre and PVR, also known as a portable video and music player; the Archos AV500.
Superb screen; functions as a PVR too
A wonderful performer, despite its looks

The Archos proved to be the best buy - it seemed a little pricey initally but we have managed to get a great deal of use out of the product. Im not a technical person and this was preety easy to get a handle on. We have 100GB option which meant we...
Good viewing screen ; great storage potential ; Good use of a variety of resolution material ; Useful to have the options of power points in the kit ; Reasonable use of power 6-7 hours per full charge
Trickey menus to start with - but it is worth it ; Doesnt cope with any shock - so travel and handle with care ; You need the leather case to keep it standing , but this covers the sensor if you want to use the remote control ; Doesnt like to charge...

I love this device, I bought one whilst on hols in the UK in July got the 60GB version for $600 AU and got 5 year Accidental damage cover for $200 AU. So hopefully they will replace it when it accidentally dies.
