Asus Taichi

Hands-on: What's better than one 1080p IPS screen in an 11-inch laptop? Two, of course.

The massive trackpad is lovely to use and of course supports Windows 8 multi-touch gestures. Interestingly, the Taichi’s ‘inner’ screen doesn’t support touch, so this definitely a necessity when using it in ‘laptop mode’.

Asus Taichi review

A Windows 8 laptop with an extra screen in the lid

Dual 1080p screens ; Bang & Olufsen audio ; Comfortable, backlit keyboard ; 256GB SSD ; Windows 8

Average battery life ; Only 4GB RAM ; Dim screen ; Huge price tag

Anything one screen can do, two screens can do better. Such is the thinking behind Asus's latest premium notebook-tablet hybrid, the Asus Taichi.

Asus Taichi review

Two HD screens are always better than one, right? That's certainly the case for this bold Ultrabook from Asus

Two dispays are better than one ; Sexy looks ; Bold approach to Windows 8

Screens prone to smudges ; Not powerful enough for gaming ; A tad bulky

A beautiful Ultrabook maverick that confirms two HD screens can definitely be better than one

Asus Taichi

Is it a notebook? Is it a tablet? Nope: the folding Asus Taichi is both. Unfortunately, as you'll see in the video review above, it's a jack of all trades, and master of none. The keys are slipper, making typing tricky, and the screen quality just...

The world’s first dualscreen ultrabook is an adequate laptop and a decent tablet – but that’s not quite enough, says Matt Warman

Asus Taichi Review

Taiwanese computer firm Asus became a better recognised and more established player in the laptop and tablet markets in 2012, thanks to the innovation of its Transformer Pad series of Android tablets such as the Transformer Prime and the Transformer...

Unique notebook to tablet dual-screen design, high-end finish, powerful internal specifications

Fiddly screen-switching control, non-touch internal display, three-hour battery life, high price

The Asus Taichi is a brilliantly designed and stylish looking device, which is very lightweight and portable. But for £1,000 for the lowest configuration, it's a little pricey for a notebook with a bonus tablet function.

Asus Taichi review

Well here's something you don't see every day -- a laptop withnot one, but two screens. Oh, and it has Windows 8, a fastprocessor and a couple of cameras too.

Two HD screens, fast processor, Windows 8

Not for everyone, pricey for either laptop or tablet

It's likely to have a niche audience, but if you reallycan't make up your mind between a laptop and a tablet, or like toshow off what you're working on to others, then the Asus Taichi issleek enough and powerful enough to do a decent job. Then...

See both sides of the Asus Taichi 21

This dual-screen laptop is clever, but a glaring omission keeps it from being practical.

The ; offers a clever implementation of a dual-screen design in a slim Core i7 chassis.

Only one of the screens is touch-enabled, which feels like a major oversight. There are probably only a handful of situations where you'd need an outward-facing display.

More of a clever proof-of-concept than a practical product, the Asus Taichi still delivers on its basic promise, combining two displays for a unique take on the laptop/tablet/hybrid genre.

Asus Taichi review (11.6-inch)

Since Windows 8's debut last October, PC manufacturers have all followed pretty much the same playbook. Build a laptop with a touchscreen? Check. A docking laptop / tablet hybrid? Check. A strange, hinged device that twists and turns from tablet to...

Both displays look great ; Relatively light and thin ; Solid gesture and touch response

Terrible battery life ; Expensive ; Some problematic performance quirks ; Touchpad has issues

Originality does not a compelling product make

Asus Taichi

The Taichi is an experiment. While some may find a use for its dual screens, and it's built well enough, the lack of a touchscreen on the interior and troubling battery life could put even those people off.

Both screens are full HD and IPS ; Backlit keyboard is decent ; Affordable price for the hardware involved

Poor battery life ; Interior screen isn't touch, which can lead to some frustrating moments

The Asus Taichi is expected to hit stores in Australia mid-November.
