Samsung SyncMaster 173P - 17in TFT monitor

Fresh from claiming the top accolade in our large screen LCD group test, Samsung has submitted another monitor for me to scrutinise – the 17in SyncMaster 173P. Now, as far as screens of this size go, the 173P is not the cheapest TFT monitor you can buy...

Versatile multimedia for the desktop. Handy remote control. Extra AV connectors and headphone jack on side.

Moderate smearing on moving images. Weak documentation. No mute button on front panel.

This dual-function 17-inch widescreen monitor/TV knows that all work and no play makes for a dull monitor. Designed for business, its picture-in-picture (PiP) feature lets news junkies keep current while working on office applications. It has a lot of att

Samsung SyncMaster 173MW

If you want an all-in-one package, the SyncMaster 173MW may be just the ticket, with lots of video extras and good PC performance. Be prepared to pay for it, though.

Decent image quality; loaded with features and connection types; wide-screen format is ideal for movie watching.

Pricey for a 17-inch display; less screen real estate than standard 17-inch LCDs; video performance isn't that great.

If you are looking for an all-inclusive multimedia display, this may be the ticket; but unless you plan to fully use all of the added frills, your eyes may be bigger than your wallet.

Samsung SyncMaster 173MW

Text looks great, but go elsewhere for entertainment.

Crisp text and appealing audio features don't make the most of the wide-screen format; other monitors provide better graphics.

173MW Silver 17

Although both of the other 17-inch monitors we tested reproduced the bright colors and flesh tones in our test screens better than this one did, the 173MW still earned a score of Very Good for graphics. Its video was a tad less pleasing. In our...

Three brightness settings (entertainment, Internet, and text) and four color settings (cool, normal, warm, and SRGB) are preprogrammed. The 173MW also allows you to save your own brightness and color settings; an animated tutorial guides you painlessly...

Samsung SyncMaster 192MP

The Samsung SyncMaster 192MP falls a bit short as a dedicated TV, but as a computer desktop display that lets you monitor television while you work, it's hard to beat.

The SyncMaster 192MP is clearly a monitor first and a television second, since the image smearing makes it less attractive as a TV. But it serves very well as a monitor, with a large image and generally outstanding image quality.

Samsung SyncMaster 173P

Innovative design and high-quality images make this "hands-free" monitor a hands-down winner.

The swank SyncMaster 173P's outstanding image quality (and good looks) make it a fine choice for graphics and entertainment applications, if you can swing its premium price.
