Xiaomi Redmi 2 review: It might be a bargain, but buyer beware

Xiaomi's wallet-friendly Redmi 2 offers great value for its price, but only if you're willing to accept the many trade-offs.

The affordable Redmi 2 sells for a mere $120 or £80 and offers features such as dual 4G SIM slots and Xiaomi's easy to use MIUI OS. The 8-megapixel camera takes pretty good shots as well.

The phone's low 1GB of RAM will adversely affect performance when running a lot of apps, and it runs an older version of Android.

The low price of the Redmi 2 makes it an appealing option, but you'll be better off paying a bit more for Xiaomi's more premium offerings if you can afford to do so.

Big enough to be useful, small enough to fit in a pocket.

No Google Play Store out of the box.

If you’re willing to take a risk, the Xiaomi Redmi 2 could be a good option. However, the new 2nd generation Moto E is a similar price point and is actually available in Western markets, so it seems a safer bet.

Xiaomi Redmi 2 review: Spare hand

The Xiaomi Redmi 2 is helping the company cross into the 64-bit era. A catchy enough headline for a sequel that's not overly generous with the upgrades. On second thought, a new generation chipset (lower-midrange but still), a more recent OS and LTE...

4.7" IPS 720p capacitive touchscreen with 312ppi; Corning Gorilla Glass 2 ; Android 4.4.4 KitKat with MIUI v.6 ; 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU; 1 GB of RAM (8GB model) or 2GB of RAM (16GB model); Adreno 306 GPU; Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 ; 8MP camera...

The 8GB version has 1GB of RAM ; Limited availability ; Shipping cross-continent may complicate service and warranty

The big question when dealing with a sequel: is it worth the upgrade? The big question when Xiaomi is involved: are these guys running a charity?

Xiaomi Redmi 2 Review: Improves on Redmi 1S, offers a better camera and is a good entry-level option

Xiaomi has had a great run since it launched in India last June. While its entry level Redmi 1S was well received in India, it was discontinued towards the end of last year to help concentrate on Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G. The Redmi Note 3G was stopped from...

Xiaomi Redmi 2’s major improvement over its predecessor is the addition of the dual SIM 4G slots, higher capacity battery and a new user interface. While this may make sense for someone living in a city which is blessed with a 4G connectivity, for...

Xiaomi Redmi 2 Smartphone Review

A basic solution. The Redmi 2 aims to be a mainstream smartphone for a budget price. Its humble 720p display and Snapdragon 410 SoC aren't trying to break any records, but will instead offer sufficient and reliable performance for everyday use.

Great display quality, Relatively bright backlight, Responsive glass touchscreen, Good speaker quality for music and movies, MicroSD and dual 4G micro-SIM support, Low-light camera performance is good for a smartphone, Inexpensive

No WiFi calling, Some included apps are buggy, Average battery life, Average graphics performance, Average system performance, Below average telephone quality, Bloatware

The Redmi 2 has a lot going for it, including its impressive glass display, dual SIM support with 4G, responsive touchscreen, and an inexpensive price of $130 at Gearbest. It performs reasonably well in almost all core categories, which is not easy to...

Xiaomi Redmi 2 review: It might be a bargain, but buyer beware

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is well-known for its low-cost, high-quality products, but unfortunately, the Redmi 2 fails to live up to expectations. That isn't to say the sub-$120 (roughly £75 or AU$140) smartphone is a bad device, but slight...

Xiaomi Redmi 2 Review

A 4.7” phone with a 720p display, Snapdragon 410 system chip, and 8-megapixel camera, the Xiaomi Redmi 2 takes the most pride in its software, the MIUI v6…

Very low price ; Great battery life ; Sharp display with pleasing colors for its class ; Captures good images for its class ; MIUI skin has some nice customization options and manual settings ; Removable battery, expandable storage

Issues with some key apps on MIUI ; Limited 4G LTE bands ; Not fully tailored to non-Asian markets ; Recharge time is a bit too slow ; Screen refresh rate is low

At a full retail price of $130 (799 yuan in China), the Xiaomi Redmi 2 is one of the most affordable Android phones money can buy.
