Sony Xperia 5 Review: Smaller and cheaper than the Xperia 1

The Sony Xperia 5 takes all of the features that made the Xperia 1 a success and boils them down into a smaller, cheaper handset.

(Still) the best camera we’ve seen on a Sony phone;Sony design fairly distinctive;Balanced, attractive OLED display

21:9 screen has its practical drawbacks;Camera good, but not among the best;Strong rivals at the same price

Sony Xperia 5 review: excellent camera and battery life

A companion piece to the Xperia 1 that's worth considering for your next phone

Crisp and vibrant display ; Very decent camera performance ; Bloat-free Android

Ultra-tall screen feels a little weird ; Oddly placed fingerprint sensor ; Glossy back gets smudged quickly

Hands on: Sony Xperia 5 review

Sony has taken to IFA 2019 to reveal its next compact flagship phone, and there's a new name involved as it's called the Xperia 5. This isn't a follow-up to the Xperia 1, instead it sits almost alongside in a similar way to the 'Xperia Compact'...

Strong specs Premium design

Not as small as previous handsets No 3.5mm headphone jack

The Sony Xperia 5 features a variety of high-end features that you wouldn't normally see on a smaller phone, but its 21:9 aspect ratio may make it difficult to hold for those with smaller hands.

Sony Xperia 5 review: Small sensation or serious oddball?

If you can live with the design then this is a perfectly powerful phone, with a battery that lasts well and a little more compact design than some.

Battery lasts the day ; Plenty of power ; Quality design and waterproofing

Fingerprint scanner ; Camera is slow and doesn't perform well ; Screen aspect ratio doesn't really work at this size

If you want a smaller-scale phone and can live with the design, then this is a perfectly powerful phone, with a battery that lasts well enough. But the camera isn't competitive and the fingerprint scanner is poor.

Sony Xperia 5

Despite being cheaper than the Xperia 1, this phone lacks the wow factor of its bigger brother and is therefore hard to recommend. Read why in our full review.

Sony Xperia 5 review

Premium, powerful and pocket-friendly – but not quite perfect

Excellent display ; Versatile camera ; Good battery life

Awkward fingerprint scanner ; Side Sense is temperamental ; No case included

A pocketable flagship with a sensational screen and a great camera

Sony Xperia 5 Review: Falls short of flagship quality

In early 2019, Sony launched the flagship Xperia 1 with a large 4K cinema-wide display. In September, it gave consumers the smaller Xperia 5. The Xperia 5 is considered by Sony to be a flagship, and at £700 it is certainly priced like one. The only...

Bright HDR AMOLED display perfect for movie watching ; Feels nice in the hand ; Nice ambient mode display option ; Stereo audio is clear and loud

Very overpriced for lacklustre features ; Battery too small for premium chipset ; Sony just can't get the best from its own cameras ; Messy button/sensor arrangement ; Doesn't feel like a premium product

Sony Xperia 5 Review

We take a look at Sony's latest smartphone, featuring a triple 12-megapixel camera setup and FullHD 21:9 CinemaWide 6.1-inch screen.

The Sony Xperia 5 offers a good suite of photography, and especially professional videography, solutions. With a FullHD 21:9 ratio screen, you can view your footage back and watch movies as they were intended to be viewed. The 8-megapixel selfie camera...

Sony Xperia 5 review

Long live the Sony Xperia Compact - only it's no longer called a Compact but goes by the much less revealing Xperia 5. Historically the only maker to put...

Bright and HDR-capable notchless cinematic display.

No audio jack.

The Pixel 4 might prove to be your thing when it arrives, an iPhone 11 Pro could make sense if you're fruitily inclined, and a selection of reasonably-sized Galaxies exist that may tempt you as well. Esteemed rivals these, and ones that the Xperia 5...

Sony Xperia 5 hands-on review: Compact, colorful, but not quite a winner

Is Sony's Xperia 5 a true successor to the much-loved and now mostly deceased Compact series of Sony phones that packed winning specs into a smaller, more easy to handle body? Almost. It certainly wins on the design, style, colors, and size; but there...
